The very first film was people leaving a factory. Lots of inane bullshit was shown in France to showcase the invention of the motion picture. He's a traditionalist if anything.
>>
>>69284638
He pretty much rejects any sort of "film language" that he said started with griffith and is far more interested in the asbstract. The more someone tried to construct or tell a story the more he didnt like and when someone would show the most simple, abstract work that probably had the least amount of thought put into it he would call it a masterpiece. I wrote a paper in another class ranting against one of his films before i had him as a teacher and the professor chewed me out and told me it was a shit paper even though i was just voicing the fact that i was extremely fucking uncoformatble watching the same static shot of the woods for 70 fucking minutes.

In the end though he did kind of convince me that anyone should be allowed to try whatever they want with a camera. Im still very mixed about the experience. I deffinatley hated a lot of what I saw at this school but now I feel greatful that its over and i was exposed to so much shit I would never have watched in my free time.

I hear great things about the music program.
Call me a pleb but I love Wes Anderson, Hayao Miyazaki, and Terry Gilliam. Those are the films I love, so I basically got 0% of what I wanted from the program but that doesn't mean it wasn't ultimately for the best.
>>
>>69284799
Still does.

Did you go to Calarts?
>>
>>69284638
it isn't really accurate to say 'common events'. he talks a lot about how he chooses specific times of the year (and sometimes days) to shoot to get the right image. then in post-production he manipulates the image, combining different shots. and there's the fact that he travels around the world for these shots.

>>

>but most human beings on this planet probably wouldn't consider him a good filmmaker.
Most human beings on this planet have very little experience of cinema outside of the usual comfort zones, and I don't say this to simply defend the guy. Most people are 'plebs' and this isn't news.
>>
>>69285577
He was referring to human beings, not pleb animals.
>>
>>69285602
That would mean only humans dislike his """"work""""
>>
>>69285446
Pretty shit taste though.
>>
>>69285577
I mean just make up your own mind about his work. Forget any reputation he has and just watch one of his films as they are and see if you get anything out of it. I personally think its a little abusive of the "contract' between audience and theatre goers to make them watch something so mundane for such a long time. In a gallery you look at a painting until you are satisfied and move on. It felt like I was being made fun of in a way and I resent feeling like a pleb because it didnt stimulate any deeper thought, or if i did start thinking things out of boredom, that it was the film who provoked it and not just my mind doing its thing. I suppose he is trying to create a meditative experience but being forced to meditate is insuferable and doesnt work. But thats just me.

Never found anyone even half-close to that on KG. 90% are posers who believe truly that they have 'made' it by entering the tracker. so what's your beef then because in every single thread you just speak vaguely about 'circlejerk' and cliques or whatever. it just sounds like you got your feelings hurt on the forum

i maintain my lbxd account so i can go back and remember what i've seen. my memory isn't good enough to remember every single film i watch over the years.

>Jonathan rosenbaum

I stopped listening to him when he said AFI's 100 movies list included Birth of a Nation and called the AFI racist for including it.

It didn't, and never had.
>>
>>69288190
but the movie is racist...?
>>
>>69287971
What the fuck would Art of Misdirection even torrent?
Magic books?
>>
>>69288204
libcucks pls go
>>
>>69288204
But racism isn't a 'bad' thing per se.
>>
>>69288190
What. He didn't call the AFI racist. That's such a wrong reading of what he said you must be from /v/

For posterity:
>Is the list simply a brute commercial ploy dreamed up by a consortium of marketers to repackage familiar goods, or is it a legitimate cultural intervention that's somehow supposed to improve the quality of our lives? For that matter, are we still capable of distinguishing between the two? If it's the former, then surely it qualifies as front-page news only if we're living in the equivalent of Stalinist Russia. If it's the latter, then why does the list contain so many movies that lie--movies that lie about Vietnam (The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now), about racism (The Birth of a Nation, Taxi Driver, Pulp Fiction), about countless other matters?
>>
>>69288204
Which is fine and all, but don't call an institute racist for including a movie in a list, if that institute never included it in the first place.

That's just telling a lie.
>>
>>69288236
How did Pulp Fiction lie about racism?
>>
>>69288190
>>69288257
But you're wrong. The Birth Of A Nation was selected by AFI
>>
>>69288257
Nah, it did.

Pussies pulled it though

>a single 8 minute
No
>>
>>69288357
why are you so intent on misreading what he's saying
>>
>>69288385
Not him, but it's a very easy argument that JR is doing the same with the AFI
>>
>>69288385
Probably because Rosenbaum is intent on overthinking and ultimately misreading the AFI's intentions. It was specifically to entertain.
>>
>>69288561
>I was just pretending to be retarded
>>
>>69288571
But I wasn't even him. Rosenbaum was clearly overthinking shit when he wrote that.

Hi everybody, DB here.
Kristen and I have noticed the standards of cinematic discourse on these boards have really been raised of late. Rest assured we will be featuring an entry on 4chan culture on our blog soon.

You expect Spotlight to be a kind of black and white, A to B, who dunnit movie. What you are really getting is a tone poem about the history of Catholic child abuse in Boston, it's effects on the city, on victims, church goers, and what makes it so difficult to get a clear picture of and combat.

>spotlight
>a tone fucking poem
holy shit hahahahaha
