Will anything else ever come close to this show?
>>
>>69250776
I loved this scene and in general how the show doesn't try to cover up how openly racist the country was at the time. A liberal friend of mine pointed to this scene in particular as evidence that I was a "closet racist" that secretly enjoyed all of the racism. All of the people who do/say racist things on the show are shitty people. Don grew up poor and seems to sympathize with the black characters. One of the best scenes dealing with race was the one where Dawn stays over at Peggy's and Peggy hesitates to leave her purse out near Dawn. You can see Peggy struggling with what she's been told her whole life, versus her experience, that Dawn is a kind and trustworthy woman. I'm rambling now, but fuck I love this show.

You can tell he has good intentions, but just doesn't know how to properly express himself without being kind of condescending. Like that scene with Hollis in the elevator when he awkwardly tries to ask him what kind of tvs black people buy. It makes sense because he grew up in a strictly white environment and is just now learning how to interact with people of other races. We see this again when he's awkward about the gift-giving to the people from Honda.

Don suspected that Sal lead Lee Garner Jr. on. That's why he was fired. If Don hadn't have known Sal was gay, he would've thought that Lee was just being a homo, and Sal declined his advances. One way or another, Sal was fired because he was a fag.

Three reasons:

More women in the workplace now, they usually don't approve of the hardcore drinking that men do, and what it can lead to.

The rise of the bean counters. If a study shows that the average person is less productive while drinking, then drinking won't be allowed because it will cut into the bottom line.

Also liability reasons. If someone leaves the office drunk and gets in a crash, he could sue the company for being complicit in allowing this to happen.

Madmen is one of those shows (and this seems to be an AMC syndrome) where you will have a few episodes that do almost nothing for the plot and then a big episode or two that take two huge leaps forward. So for example you might get: 1 (big plot) 2 (big plot) 3 (no plot) 4 (no plot) 5 (big plot) 6 (no plot) 7 (big plot) 8 (no plot) 9 (big plot) 10 (no plot) 11 (no plot) 12 (big plot) 13 (big plot)

Not the same anon, but I'd say yea. The show is not about a driving plot. It's more about the emotional whereabouts of the characters. Don't expect material circumstances to change from episode to episode.

That said, it's much more like life in that you start concentrating on the more abstract or trivial stuff and suddenly you realise the whole world (of the show) is changing around them from season to season.

>>
>>69256781
There are a shitload of big plot elements, but its not like people are dying left and right or there are gunfights and shit. If you don't give a shit about the characters or find the their business interesting you shouldn't watch. Its a character study, but I'm not saying shit doesn't go down from time to time. The plot does move quite a bit from the start of the series to the end but its all about what they do with the business and what happens to their personal relationships

I've made the mistake of watching madmen while going to my advertising college.

Went to the office expecting one thing, found myself dealing with a bunch of hipster and dumb people trying to figure out social network and deluded god complexed *insert computer area here* developers trying to figure out why things go viral with numbers while trying to turn viralizing in a computer algorithm.

No sex. No hot secretary, no nothing. My position in the company is the same as Draper's now. It's pretty boring sometimes, but I get to travel alot and live like the 1% for a day or two.

Two of my favourite moments throughout the entire show are in season 4, when they use a Tomorrow Never Knows mashup and at the very end of the season with You Only Live Twice.

Yeah, i've visited his office(s) a number of times over the years and it's gotten more and more hipster/different from mad men. I have some glimpses of mid 80's advertising in memory but I was tiny then and adult stuff went over my head. I've been to events with him and heard old timers joke about the golden days, it makes me jealous.

I wonder what the mad-men industry of today is. Stylish, high-flying, important, autonomous... hmm.

But "stylish" is the most important part anon.

I don't think it was the marketing industry but the era itself that makes madison avenue so alluring. The show could have been about Henry and his life in the political world and it probably would have been just as charming.

The problem is pic related. When the working males of your generation look like this and act like passive aggressive pussies, every industry they touch turns to garbage.

>>
>>69258397
Did this show really even need the whole "Don isn't really Don but a guy who stole Don's identity in the war" aspect? Looking back it seems like the most contrived part of an otherwise trope-free series. You don't need to have a literal identity crisis to have an identity crisis.
>>

If you have nothing to back your business major, then you'll be fucked.

Using myself for example, I am a creative person, I like to create content, I always had a talent for it, since I was a fucking kid. Creative writting, drawing (but I'm not that good at it, just decent), then computers happened, but I got lucky, I'm good at this stuff too, so I quickly became a web dev by myself before going to college.

I didn't want to make CS or some shit like that because I don't like to go too deep on math too, call me dumb if you like, discrete math is just fine. So while I was going to high school, I just got myself an IT degree in which I learned SQL and other shit, it was fine by me, and I was right.

So I went to a business-related major, and I'm fine. But I had something to "back" it, I was learning how could I sell myself and the things I do.

Betty's character progressed a lot over the course of the show. You have to understand that she was raised to be vain and childish and it took her a great deal of self-exploration to overcome that start - but she did.

Are people who say that nothing happens in Mad Men serious?

We literally follow these characters for a whole decade. A president gets shot and mankind reaches the moon. There's divorces, weddings, funerals. The business collapses and gets bigger and merges with another. Characters do drug and grow hippy hair. One literally turns crazy, cuts his nipple off and gives it to another as a gift.

And nothing happens in Mad Men?

I think there's not a "breaking point" in their relationship. It's more like a fade-away kind of rupture. Thoughout their marriage there are a lot of things happening that hurts their relationship and they can both feel it. That's why Megan forced a trio with him and her friend over at Cal, to try to bring back the spark. It didn't quite work so well.

>>
>>69260686

Breaking Bad was also focused on one thing and at most two characters at once. If a side character was introduced, they were always directly involved with Walt and his story in some way. There was really only one main story, and it made it easy to follow for the crowd who likes to go on their phone to look at memes while watching things.

Mad Men expects a lot of the viewer, and punishes you for not paying attention.
