Why do people still use DVDs? We've had Blu-Ray for almost 10 years. DVD looks like shit on a modern television and doesn't even look good when you rip it onto a phone.
DVD was a very nice technology for the 480i era that unfortunately came a bit too late. Mass-market HDTVs were right around the corner when DVD rolled out, and even though DVD was the absolute apex of perfection on 480i TVs, it was unfortunately no-where near good enough for HD because the compression technology just wasn't there.

It actually was not. There was still a lot of image quality to be squeezed out of 480i.
Try watching a blu-ray on a good production monitor like a Sony PVM and it will blow away DVD of the same film. The higher bitrate makes all the difference.

There were those Superbit DVDs that Sony used to put out that were high bitrate. I can't remember how many movies were released in that format, though. In general some movies were better than others when it came to how compressed the image was.
The big thing about DVD is that it was using MPEG2 compression, which was not very efficient. If DVD had been capable of utilizing MPEG4 (which would be impossible to do while having backward compatibility with older players) the image quality would have been superior.
