Season 2 by far.

Ending was a little meh, but the rest of the season was mindblowingly good.

The alien thing was fun too, didn't bother me at all.

Sure, Thornton was excellent in S1, but other than him everything was pretty weak compared to S2. S2 doesn't revolve around a villain, so having a Malvo-like character would be out of place, Hanzee was just the amount of cold-blooded killer it needed.

2 was a bit better. I love them both though. I think the period setting and the ayylmaos are what put 2 over for me.
