What? It's a really good piece of literature. A classic you might say.

I miss Quentin. Like him or hate him, he brought character wherever he went.

He had a real knack for riling up some of the more despicable losers on 4chan.

You have a man who fought for his country and became incredibly rich through his own means, hard work, and ingenuity. Does he enjoy his wealth and new found social status? Does he honor his fallen comrades by living the life they no longer can? Does he find happiness and peace after a long struggle that was his life?

No, he does not. You have a crybaby who pines after a woman whom she herself does not recognize as a man by throwing parties for people he does not care for and who neither love him, nor accept him, in return. He's so desperately in love with this shade, this thing that can't be described as human so akin is she to be more properly described as an ornament, with no interesting qualities or redeeming features except her face and body, that he buys a house, an entire structure with the surrounding land, right across from where she lives. He himself does not even have the courage to properly face and express his love for her, even if it means facing off against an obvious, if not mentally deficient, at the very least emotionally disturbed, terrible and insufferable human being. So what is his reward after all of this? A death that no one acknowledges, save for one sniveling coward.

So to reiterate, and tl;dr, fuck this book, fuck the people in it, fuck the "scenery" and "imagery", fuck everything in it, and fuck you and everyone else for thinking this was anything other than a glorified pseudo-psychological bullshit profile into the mind of a self-destructive, whiny, sad sack of shit known simply as Gatsby.

/pol/ proclivities, it's easily understable. A view of the world in which you're unable to accept certain behaviors, races, genders, etc. The non-ability to sympathize and then acting as if this is bad- or a failure, a problem- on the thing itself.
Very widespread ideology currently in the world.

But that's nonsense, and you're just reading it like a fifth grader would: for the plot.

The Great Gatsby is essentially about the fact that life disappoints us. Look at Gatsby: he's basically a Romantic superhero who has spent his entire adult life in search of a single transcendent thing (i.e., his nostalgia-mottled idea of Daisy), and who, unlike many people, actually follows his ambition through. Everyone has that sort of abstract longing for permanent fulfillment. It's why we enjoy escapist narratives that show adventures, or whatever.

But Fitzgerald points out the failure of that mindset, and how, ultimately, real life doesn't give happy anime endings. Gatsby almost has what he wants, but he needs it to be absolutely perfect (like it's in a fucking fairy tale, he can't accept that Daisy was ever in love with Tom Buchanan) and so he ruins it. People can't really achieve that permanent, immortal transcendence that they want. Worldly concerns (monotony, banality, social status and structures) simply prevent it.

If your argument is that everyone in the novel is terrible, then yeah, no shit. That's basically the point. They're all immensely flawed people because that's how human beings are in real life. The vibe I get is that you don't like ambiguity, which is unfortunate, because real life--and actual, serious literature--tends to contain a lot of that.

tl;dr: You're a retard. It's basically a poignant depiction of how Romanticism (and our tendencies to solipcize the world around us into something that has more personal meaning than it actually does) fails miserably, and how the real world doesn't give a shit about your inner narrative. It's a great novel and you read for the plot like a nine year old.
>>
>>69118404
It was nihilistic wank and you trying to picture it as grandeur is insulting.

>>
>>69118554
>nihilistic

Yes.

>wank

It's around 180 pages. It's actually immensely impressive how compact Fitzgerald was with his meaning.

>you trying to picture it as grandeur is insulting

I guess you picked up on something that 75+ years of criticism missed out on, then.

>>
>>69118873
I'm a little embarrassed about it, but Conrad isn't really to my personal taste. I've probably read more stuff about him than I have by him, which is a shame, because by most academic accounts he's pretty great.

I will say that that, all preference aside, he's a killer prose stylist when he wants to be. Heart of Darkness is another one a lot of high schoolers complain about, and it's unjustified. If you get the chance, just reread it for the language alone. Some of the passages about the jungle are brilliant on their own.

>>69118984
>The Winter of our Discontent

Honestly never read this one, despite its classic status. I have a friend who told me Travels with Charley was one of the worst things he's ever read, so I have a reflexive aversion to Steinbeck, which probably isn't warranted.

nothing to be embarrassed about, mate. Conrad's prose is rather dense and off-putting to some. i've read several of his works, my favorites being The Secret Sharer and Heart of Darkness, but i tend to quit reading his longer works several pages in. maybe he's not for me either. i'll try to tackle him further down the line because i never really truly give up on any author considered master class without reading at least two of his major works.

I'll have to check out The Secret Sharer; I've never really disliked Conrad, per se, so I might as well revisit him while he's on my mind.

Seriously, I'd kill for a quarter of the facility with language that people like he and Nabokov had, with that polylingual fuckery. It really makes you wonder what his work would look like if it were originally written in his native language.
