The strategy is as follows:
1. Make a movie you know will be well received.
2. Release in "smaller" markets first.
3. Since movie is of a good quality, critics and smaller market audiences will generate da hype.
4. Release in Large market within a week or so and cash in.
Alternatively, studios that know they have a stinker on their hands rarely spread out their premieres amongst markets like that -- they don't want to deal with the cut in profits due to poor word of mouth.
