It's good because everyone can enjoy it. The plebs can enjoy it for the surface level action/space/war movie, and the patricians can enjoy the satirical elements and compare Verhoeven's vision to Heinlein's GOAT novel.

It's great for teenagers because of the gore and violence, the breasts, the spaceships and aliens. It's good for 20-somethings because of the political satire, the campiness, Neil Patrick Harris. It's good for 30-somethings because of the balance of cgi and practical effects and Michael Ironside. It just has so many levels that you either pick up on or you don't. But it's really just a fun movie. A guilty pleasure.
