It's honestly both worse that you could imagine, and also not as bad as you'd imagine, at the same time. I've watched it 14 times now. The extent of lovehate that I have for it is unprecedented. The more you watch the more you see what he was going for, and the more maddening it becomes as you see how they botched basically everything.

No. Watched it once with a ticket. Once snuck in after watching The VVitch. Then studied the cam that came out, taking scene by scene notes. Planning on doing a fan-edit when an HDrip comes out. The levels of fuckery are maddening. He intentionally made LITERALLY EVERYTHING ambiguous. The dipshits here like to pretend that it was done intentionally to make some broader, but after listening to/reading his interviews, the dude's a lazy fuck. He didn't bother explaining anything because that would involve too much effort.

Yeah almost all of it looks great, Doomsday cave troll was relatively dogshit, and I hate the camera whipping forward impossibly when WW jumps, but yeah it's mostly good looking. Sound design wasn't bad but it to me is actually an example of more is less in the Doomsday fight. There is so many layers of sound effects that it just becomes fucking loud noise.
And best Batman, aesthetically, ever. Plus they incorporate grapplefu and the DKR imagery is great.

I actually think that, as written, there is a version of the movie where MARTHA could actually work. But it needed to be a recurring, obvious motif the entire time. It needed to be like a mantra that haunts Batman the entire time. Instead it's vaguely alluded to like twice after the intro.

It's a fascinating watch if you like to study filmmaking and movie history and stuff. You can learn a lot more from studying a disaster than studying something where everything went right.

The whole "Martha" theme was handled very hamfistedly. What we got was two flashbacks of a dying Thomas Wayne muttering "Martha", and at least two shots of the Wayne's tomb that lingered too long on Martha's name.
I really like the idea that Bruce and Clark bonds over their mothers sharing a name, but the movie handled it very poorly.

And it can't be stressed enough how fucking literal-definition-of-the-term stupid almost everything in the plot is. There's no reason that Batman should have been investigating the White Portuguese. He couldn't have known about what it was carrying, or why that was significant, without knowing about LEXCORP's involvement, but the entire investigation leads up to him discovering LEXCORP's involvement.
There was no reason for Clark to be at the Lex Luthor party. He was writing sports that morning.
There was no reason for Luthor to splode congress. He gained nothing from doing it, and the 2 suggested motivations for why he did it directly contradict each other.
There was no reason for Luthor to think that the Batsignal in the sky was Batman challenging Superman to a fight. Yet he somehow knows it is. And, even though he apparently knows Superman threatened Batman about using the light, he still kidnaps Superman's family to make him do what he woulda did anyway. This can go on, almost every plotline isn't "2deep" it's just fucking not thought out.

But it was and it wasn't. The Man-Bat dream was explicitly about Martha but the way it plays in the sequence of the movie it just seems like a random fucking dead-parents caused Batman metaphor, which it still totally is too. On my first watch, The Man-Bat dream didn't really inform why Batman REEEEEing out about the his mom's name wasn't stupid, or was an earned payoff of the Martha set-up.

Exactly. They even made it a point to OPEN THE MOVIE with the MARTHA shit, but that really kind of just made it less coherent. Particularly because it's got a goddamn hacky poem going on at the same time and most people kind of tuned out anyway because it was a double-depressing attempt to retell the fucking Batman dead parents backstory, yet again. That should have been a recurring story told over the first act or something. And they tried to salvage things by cutting back to it after Superman starts yelling MARTHA, but by then it's too late. We the audience haven't thought about Batman's Martha in hours.
Someone like Nolan could build a plot around a word, and have that one word said at the right time change the entire conflict. He was able to tell a story where a spinning top had it's own subtextual meaning that was clear to the audience, because he spent the entire movie reminding us of exactly what the top means. Snyder didn't do that with Martha, adequately. She means a lot of things, as presented. And none of them really nail to the audience, as they're watching, EXACTLY why this would cause Batman to do a complete 180 like that. Fucking Superman called his Mom, MA KENT, MARTHA, and Batman had a PTSD episode about his dead mom, named MARTHA, and they were immediately best buds.

And I'm pretty sure the more direct cause of the change of heart was supposed to be because of the Knightmare. Supes says "She was all I had, and you took her away from me" in this post-apocalyptic world where he is a fascist godruler. That was in the script. What wasn't in the script though, was the stupid fucking Flash tease where he literally screams about LOIS LANE. Making what should have been an ambiguous dream that should haunt Batman about it's meaning... into some weird extended threat about some woman he doesn't know (and makes no effort to investigate). BUT, if it was left ambiguous, Batman could have been spending the entire time trying to figure out what future Superman was talking about. Then now Superman is yelling about MARTHA. Batman's fucking Mom. Then Batman realizes he's talking about Supe's mom, and realizes he's become the monster. HE's about to turn Superman into the monster he was trying to fight. It's a pretty good fun with prophecies plot trope, but they completely fucked it with the Flash tease that they threw in at the last minute.
It seriously was SO CLOSE to being legitimately good, and it failed almost exclusively because of the wildly uncreative edit.
