You'd be surprised - I had a music director in high school who would cuss us out often if we kept fucking up. Most times she was really nice and a fairly pleasant person to be around, but during rehearsal she was all business. One of my most influential teachers, honestly, and looking back on it I would do it all again.
To my knowledge, in her 25 years at the school, she never had issues with administration or parents. Any parents who tried to along shit at her, she would meet with them, and they would leave with a completely different perspective than when they entered. I was on the business end of her rants more often than I care to admit, but I came out a better musician (and probably a better person) for it.
Funnily enough, I'm also a drummer.

She's actually a lot of students' favorite teacher there. The only ones who I remember complaining about her were the ones who didn't give a shit about music and we're just doing their required arts electives. She was incredibly supportive as well, and if she didn't get on my ass about keeping my grades up so I could perform, I don't think I would have graduated.

You just gave me flashbacks to my middle school symphonic band conductor. Guy would get increasingly pissed every rehearsal, becoming slightly more violent every day until he regularly started throwing chairs (luckily not at the band) and instrument cases around, often knocking everything off his stand while cussing us out until he finally lost steam and walked into his office to collapse while first chair flautist took it upon herself to continue rehearsal despite the oppressive atmosphere. Realize that the instructor was practically worthless. He only wanted to ride the coattails of greatness into the annals of history. He would berate his students and throw shit at them so that, hopefully one day, people would mention the bald chair-throwing turbofaggot as they told stories about the great musician who "learned" from the instructor.
Andrew was already great before meeting the instructor, and the instructor did basically nothing for Andrew, except for the networking by having Andrew play for that crowd at the end of the film.
While laughable, it's not the fault of the movie or screenwriter for having the instructor try to "direct" Andrew's drum solo. It shows how the instructor believes he is significant to Andrew and his greatness, when in reality the instructor is worthless.
Andrew would have become famous regardless of which school he attended, or which instructor he had.
