Sacrificing character motivation for shock value, dumbing down the plot and removing the subtle political nuance, and a greater focus on shitty OC was what killed the show. In short, season 5 killed the show.

If you've ever watched the show with a casual audience around, you'd understand. They laugh every time Tyrion mentions tits/wine/cocks because it's more or less cued for them to do so. They "ooh" and "ahh" every time someone dies without asking any questions about the ramifications of what just happened or reasoning, and they swallow everything they're told, and take it at face value with no questions asked. The audience is so easy to manipulate, they just have bad actresses saying "epic-sounding" things or killing dudes, and people just accept it as strong female characters without thinking about it for a second. Pandering to people like this is simple, and D&D are greedy enough to make that the focus of the show.
