It is inevitable, especially in this day and age, that television programmes are going to reflect the sentiments of their time. Unfortunately, this is very apparent in historical dramas were they decide to forgo historical accuracy in favour of appealing to 21st century political and idelogical sentiments. I feel it's gotten worse in the last 10 years, but perhaps it's only because we have gravitated even farther away from the ideals which permeated society in the historical settings we usually wish to portray (such as early 20th century). It does, however, make for difficult viewing when you have to deal with constant revisionism, especially if you don't agree with the politicial motivation behind said revisionism.

The Knick is an average show that could have been above average considering the reasonable acting talent, the interesting setting and good production value. Thats why it gets a lot of hate.
1. Having an accomplished black doctor in those days seems forced and unlikely, not because blacks incapable of being accomplished doctors, but because the political and socioeconomic atmosphere for that period makes the concept almost retarded. Would be happy for anyone to point me towards any historical figures that contradict that though.
2. The interracial love theme seems shoe-horned because it doesn't fit character motivation at all. Both the male and female parties have been shown to be intelligent and forward thinking for the whole season, so to engage in an illicit affair that will doom them is just shoddy writing. Not to mention neither of the characters have any chemistry with each other whatsoever.
3. There were themes that were handled very well in the show, like women's health/abortions that relied on moral ambiguity and inner conflict on part of the characters. I'm thinking of the nun and the bigguy4u who had excellent chemistry and weren't written in a hamfisted manner. Same goes for the way they handled the theme of substandard healthcare for minorities. A period-correct morally upstanding white doctor treating these people would have had as much, if not more, impact as a morally upstanding black doctor.
4. The research behind the medical techniques at the time was brilliant and the part that most appealed to me as a med student. If they kept the writing as accurate as possible I think this would be critically acclaimed.
I would make the same argument if some white dude was shoehorned into a period-piece on Africa. Sure its plausible that the village chief's right hand man is a viking who got shipwrecked, but it is dumb nonetheless.

I forgot to continue watching into the second season so I can't comment on point 2, but I'd say its not better or worse than any other forced motivations that other tv shows give on a regular basis for the sake of "drama". Not every show can be as tight and well-written as BCS (and that's largely due to Gilligan having almost full control).
Your other 2 points were positives that I largely agreed with. Though a subpoint of point 3 was that why have a black doctor if you aren't going to utilize him in the setting? Furthermore, it provides a more realistic motivation for a black doctor (empathy) than a white doctor (sympathy, white man's burden) that could be construed as racist by the "sensitive" types that are often spoke of here

However now that having a black doctor in the show makes sense from a historical perspective, I think I would agree that its right that he treat the minority patients.
I do like how they handled Thack's character throughout the season. He was, despite his flaws, pragmatic, driven and detached in order to get his job done and do it well. Not unlike some surgeons these days. I thought that was a nice touch, I wonder if it was intentional.
