I'm looking for fairytalesque 80's fantasy films, not "barbarian" or "sword and sorcery" films.
The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, The NeverEnding Story, Star Wars, Legend, Return To Oz, Willow.
Where do I go from here?
Excalibur
the black cauldron, if you don't mind animation
Ladyhawke
Dragonslayer
This barely fits but Time Bandits?

Seek out the european cut of Legend, anon.
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
The Princess Bride
>>69045428
Bingo. My favorite movie.
Ladyhawke
Lionheart
Don't let the title fool you, really fun medieval story!
>>69045550
Dragonslayer is a bit hard to watch these days but I loved it as a kid.
Definitely Ladyhawke.
Clash of the Titans maybe?
>>69045384
You go back to yesterday when you posted the exact same thread
How is Willow not "sword and sorcery"?

The Company of Wolves

Try watching "The Odyssey" mini-series with Armand Assante. The 1998 Merlin mini-series with Sam Neill, the Mists of Avalon mini-series, the Gulliver's Travels mini-series, and the 2000 Jason and the Argonauts mini-series are also all pretty fun, if flawed.
You should also watch the old Harryhausen movies, like the 1963 Jason and the Argonauts, Clash of the Titans, and the Sinbad movies.
>>69045384
Tom Cruise is perfection, holy shit
>>69045384
If you can stomach terrible but fun movies, Beastmaster and Krull are right up your alley.

>Dragonslayer is a bit hard to watch these days but I loved it as a kid.
Actually, it holds up very very well, imo. better than later shit like dragonheart.
>>69045384
how is willow not sword and sorcery??
>Deja Vu: The Thread
>>69045594
I'll allow it.Munchausen was better though.
>>69045859
My fucking nigger. Be sure to get the uncensored cut.
>>69048471
Great recs
I'd also add any of the Roger Corman produced fantasy films from the 80's, especially Deathstalker
>>69049689
Too many clothes.
"Sword & Sorcery" is a subgenre that just happens to sound better than "Conan clone".

DONT FORGET TO MENTION lord of the rings
lord of the rings
lord of the rings
and the hobbit.
>>69049850
Almost forgot.
Ends in a cliffhanger that unfortunately got resolved by Rankin/Bass but the Bakshi adaptation is still fucking great.
>>69049833
i think you're thinking of sword and sandal
>>69049833
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sword_and_sorcery_films
>>69049951
Nope. Sword and Sandal is its own subgenre that's more focused on a Greek/Roman theme.
The main difference is the kind of magic and monsters used.
Sword and Sorcery deals with lovecraftian or pagan mythology, thanks to Robert E. Howard's interest in both. Sword and Sandal deals with Greek/Roman mythological creatures.
>>69049689
The main character is not Madmartigan. It's more straight sorcery.
>>69050019
>those Italian Sword & Sandal movies
so comfy
>>69049983
Something definitely changed then.
Michael Moorcock coined the term specifically to put a specific genre to Howard's Conan stories.
Sure, there are shitloads of fantasy stories that involve swords and sorcery, but Moorcock was specifically referring to Howard's fantasy style.
>>69045859
>that part where the main character escapes his chainsby getting struck by fucking lightning
This movie was fucking awesome.
>>69045384
It' early to mid 90s, but take a look at Fantaghirò.
>>69045384
Sword and Sorcerer
Possibly the best fighting scene of any 80s film tbph famalamadingdong
>>69045859
This was one of the inspirations for Berserk.
Company of Wolves
Has the ultimate qt
>>69045384
I've been meaning to watch Legend, is it any good outside of tim curry?
>>69051250
Yes, don't watch the original American version though
>>69051250
It's a beautiful and dream-like fairy tale, like a classic Disney film but for adults. The characters are archetypes and have little depth, but the production, directing, photography and musical score more than make up for it. Btw, I'm referring to the director's cut which is significantly better than the theatrical version, although both are worth watching.
>>69051250
One version is 2/10. The better one a cheeky 8/10
>>69045730
I agree that Princess bride is a good movie
>>69045384
STARDUST
