>The latest numbers are in for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the film now has a worldwide haul of $862.9 million. According to The Hollywood Reporter, that means it's likely to conclude its run somewhere around the $875 million mark, a disappointing result for a release many initially predicted would top the $1.4 billion haul made by The Avengers in 2012. It became clear by that second or third week that $1 billion was out of the question of course, but failing to reach $900 million isn't great, especially when Batman v Superman cost such a huge amount to make.

Absurd marketing costs force these movies to make absurd amounts of money
>>
>>69031771
Because it took a whopping 420 million dollars to make and marketing the movie.

While they will only get not even half of that $900.000.000 because most of it will be taken by theatres.
>>
>>69031293

>three biggest names in DCU

I'd feel bad, but they keep hiring Snyder so they deserve it.
>>
This is so embarrassing.
>>
>>69031771
It's not even going to make that. Estimated earnings of BvS were expected to be upwards of 1.2 billion gross. Making 875m gross hurts the WB stock because they undershot Avengers by nearly 500m. The DCEU is now in doubt and any future projections on a major source of income are shaky at best.

Not really comparable because of Disney's bizarre release schedules. Cap didn't open in China for some reason. You could have tacked on another 40-60M if it did.
>>

Production budgets don't include the advertising budget.
>>
>>69032254
>the budget was 250 millions, that 400 millions meme has to stop

400 is probably including promotional budget.
>>
>>69031980
It's not even marketing anymore, it's the fact (that has always been a fact) that tentpole movies fund other movies. A studio knowingly makes some movies at a loss to maintain cred and build relationships with directors and producers, they make up for it with blockbusters. They cannot simply go back on a contract they've already made, so if a blockbuster fails to reach the high expectations set for it, the studio has to eat the loss on the expected-loss movie.
>>
>>69032346

WB has advertisement companies inside their own company, ads for them are cheap, specially since they have a tv channel in which they can play adds all the time for peanuts.

Not to mention that online advertisement is cheap as hell in general.

films need to beat Avatar or AT LEAST be on the top 10 gross or else it's considered a flop, experts say
>>
>>69032497

The truth is no one knows what the hell this shit costs. The general rule of thumb is twice production, but that's just an in the air number. With the internet, shit doesn't cost as much and as you said, the studios own most of the avenues for promotion.

Each theater chain has different deals. Each country has different deals. Making prints costs money. Back-end deals with producers and actors costs money.
>>
>>69032098
Looking at Age of Ultron's international numbers has me thinking all of Marvel strikes much, much bigger domestically. But Civil War is already on track to beat thier largest international grosser to date in the first week.

Harry Potter international numbers have to be from Europe because I can't see asia enjoying that shit in the least.

You probably know this but that's only for 10-15 countries or so, missing out China and Russia notably. Opening weekend (if we just took all the individual opening weekends and added them together, excluding US) is going to be well in excess of $300 million

>>
>>69033013
Precisely because everyone thought this movie would make at least 1.3-1.5 billion.
WB doesn't know how to manage budgets, David Ayer said that Suicide Squad has a budget of more than 250 million for the film itself, that's more than fucking BvS.

They are still in the Harry Potter and Nolan Batman high and they are throwing all that money away in movies like this, and flops like Jupiter Ascending.
>>

What makes this even more enjoyable is that Civil War is already projected to earn 900 million in foreign box office with the potential to get to 1 billion and it's going to make 450 million dollars in domestic gross just for being an Avengers movie.

It's not really a modest profit. But really more about investors. WB assured them that they were gonna beat Avengers at 1.4b. So with a 900mil box office, they only made 64% of promised (a magic number for Snyder it seems).
No one would invest in something undeperforming that badly.
>>
>>69033208
The problem is that the movie costed much more than MoS and it ended up being less profitable.

It's a Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman movie and it made only 160 million more than a Superman solo one.
If this can't break 1 billion, I doubt Justice League will, even more because this underperforming is because of TERRIBLE word of mouth which means people just don't like the DCEU.
>>
>>69033208
http://deadline.com/2016/03/universal-pictures-disney-most-profitable-movies-2015-star-wars-minions-jurassic-world-data-1201727739/

Just read this article to understand. Deadline has another more relevant image that actually breaks down how movie cost work but I don't have it anywhere.

AoU grossed 1.155 billion dollars in revenue but only made 383 million dollars in profit.

Studios don't get back 100% of the gross from box office, there are distribution cost,. Hell AoU probably wasn't even that profitable in theaters, 100 mil of that profit most likely comes from home video.

So yeah, Batman V Superman which made 550 million dollars less than AoU on the same budget is a huge disappointment and just barely profitable. Also the dislike of the movie just sours the waters for its home entertainment release since WB will get less money from that.
>>
>>69033415
>>69033425

You guys are also forgetting their stand-alone movies. Wonder Woman will most likely bomb. Who wants to see a fucking Aquaman movie?, or a Cyborg movie. Fucks sake, even the Flash would suffer.

Their best bet right now is creating a Batman DCEU. Use his massive rogue gallery and pals, and build a franchise around it. That's the only thing they seem to be able to do right, since Batman was the only good part of BvS and Suicide Squad is looking decent. They should just stick to that, and drop everything else.
>>
>>69033291
Because "Damage Control"

It's too late to turn their back right now, they have made MoS and BvS as kickstarter of DCEU along with upcoming Suicide Squad and they have announced that there will be 2 parter Justice League movie following.

If they pull back now it will be bad for publicities, so their only option is to keep moving forward and hoping that things will turn out good for them.

>Hell AoU probably wasn't even that profitable in theaters, 100 mil of that profit most likely comes from home video.

That's probably one of the reasons they got rid of Whedon and put the Russos for Infinity War. He just didn't deliver after AoU ended up getting so much flak from SJWs and mixed reviews plus how it did at the box office. WB just doesn't have good management in that aspect, they don't know when to stick to things that work and to adjust.

>>
>>69031855
The problem is that it made that much because of hype and that it was opened in the entire world at the same time, so nobody heard impressions from others.
500 million of those 800 were on release, and WB is not going to get that again.
>>
It all depends on Suicide Squad now. If it's another critical bomb then I doubt the DCEU has any chance left.
>>
>>69033291
They were already financed and scheduled to begin production on JL1 like a month after BvS came out. They fucked themselves over by putting the start of production too close to the release date. They couldn't sack the hack without hurting BvS box office. They couldn't delay production without fucking up the release schedule. As a result though everything that wasn't financed and already balls deep in pre-production or production is getting fucked. Aquaman is in dire straits. Shazam got delayed. Cyborg is likely to be delayed/cancelled. They had to dump more money into Suicide Squad to water it down for greater general audience appeal because their tentpole movie failed to act as a tentpole movie.

If SS isn't wildly successful they're fucked. If WW isn't wildly successful they're fucked. If JL1 isn't wildly successful they're fucked. Other than The Batman they're no longer confident in proactively investing in more movies without being confident that they'll even pay for themselves. BATMAN, SUPERMAN and WONDER WOMAN in one movie wasn't a sure thing, so now they're panicking about the rest of it.

Let's just say that most of future WB movies will have cheap CGI's like how downgraded the orcs in LOTR compared to The Hobbits.

Oh, and btw that Harry Potter spin-off "fantastic beast whatever" have already suffered from this; ever wondered why there's no any beasts in the trailer ? It is because (right until this seconds maybe) they haven't finished any CGI for the creatures.

That's the problem with Snyder. Civil War for instance probably has worse CGI than BvS, but it's used in a way that is not jarring. Snyder makes visual pollution. WB are way over there heads with trying to catch up and cash in on MCU's success. MCU did it perfectly with taking it's time. DCEU is already on it's 2nd movie and it's on the scale of Avengers.

I like Marvel more, BUT if they didn't cram in JL, WW, Doomsday/Death of Superman, and just concentrated on Batman vs Superman in ideals, I think Batman v Superman would've been great. Granted also if there was no shitty writing and editing.

Honestly, WW/JL Stuff could've been an end credit scene or really small mentions in the movies. It would've worked fine.

> when you have Superman and Wonder Woman and all those other shits you need a huge budget for it to not look like ass.
But the problem is BvS didn't really blow it's wad on the Superman and WW sequences. The movies budget was ballooned by the director shooting too much stuff because he didn't know exactly what he wanted and the script didn't have enough purpose.

Like, the Batmobile convoy attack sequence was probably as or more expensive than most of the Doomsday fight. And it was generally seen as TOO MUCH for what it's worth. The sequence has literally zero consequence in the story. It can be completely deleted and the narrative would lose NOTHING.

They built and dressed out an entire quarter floor of a building to make a Daily Planet set. They had a Planet conference room, a Planet work area, a Planet office, a Planet hallway etc. And for WHAT? Almost all of the Daily Planet scenes were completely redundant and meme-worthy stupid. They built giant expensive sets for Luthor to monologue about space gods in.

>Unless you want it to look Sy-Fy tier I guess.
It didn't exactly look amazing either though. The best visuals in the film where the Batman DKR "homages," and that shit can and has been accomplished for pennies on the dollar of what DC spent by shit like Sin City and 300. Doomsday looked worse than the cave troll in LOTR, and he was even shot in RAIN and at NIGHT. There's no easier way to get realistic renderings of CGI creatures, and it still looked poopy. Then they did all the fucking videogame shit with the camera impossibly whipping forward behind WW that looked completely stupid, particularly when cast against the 2 hours of "gritty realism" that preceded it.

tl;dr: could have looked better for half as much. It had too much money and not enough limitations and it went too far and did too much. It's a cluttered mess largely because it wasn't made economically.

The budget was 899 million and the ads cost another 800 million and the studios only make 1/9 of the box office after the first four hours of its release

>and just concentrated on Batman vs Superman in ideals
Needed this scene. Needed them to figure out who each other were, and have a public meeting as their alter egos in the late-second act where they just talk about shit for awhile. He fucking called it Batman v Superman because he wanted it to seem like a fucking court drama about big ideas, and then spent the whole goddmn movie having the characters literally never talk about anything directly, never talk to each other, and all the """big ideas""" are belligerently yelled at the audience by the movie. Even when they had a big whoopdidoo about SUPERMAN LITERALLY GOING TO COURT, the fucking movie literally explodes before they actually have any court shit happen. It's such a mindless cocktease. He wrote SUPERMAN APPEARS BEFORE CONGRESS just so he could throw it into the trailer apparently, and they fucking blew it up in the movie before he actually had to write anything coherent or meaningful.
