Episode 7 was an awful movie. Filled with the same mistakes as the prequels. But it brought in lots of new fans who never liked Star Wars before now.
At least the prequels brought new things to the table. Besides TIE fighters painted white (???) - Episode 7 gave us "flame troopers". Things a 10 year old would have come up with. It's got JJ written all over it.

It was the Hosnian System (Hosnia prime + 4 unnamed planets) that was destroyed, not Coruscant. The planets were made up for the movie, Coruscant is still alive and well. One of the visual dictionaries had a map that confirmed that Coruscant was in a completely different place than Hosnia Prime.
Backstory of Hosnia is that the New Republic moved the government from Coruscant to distance itself from the Empire, the lanet hosting the senate building is now rotating between those 5 member planets, depending on a vote.
The scene can still be taken as a fuck you though, as the one scene of Hosnia Prime as the laser hit looked exactly like Coruscant. I guess they decided aganst actually nuking Coruscant because that would be a bit too universe-breaking, as they still want to make their Cinematic Universe tm.
