The controls have failed for decades and continue to fail. This is not a new problem and all of Trump's solutions have been tried. Much of the border is already fenced off. The border patrol is much more militarized today. Police officers in certain border states have been given a lot of latitude to target people they suspect of being illegal.
The one thing we haven't tried is getting those people on the books so that they can become taxpayers and contribute to our system.
