China, IL was a lame bastardized version of Brad Neely's heartfelt original universe, totally drained of everything unique and endearing possessed by its humble origins. It's actually amazing how poisonous the influence of [as] executives is on a creative product. You can almost bet the phrase "Family guy audience" was used in urging the new direction they wanted Neely to take with his characters.
Neely's shorts were about strange but genuine characters who made the most of their mundane world through their warped perspectives.
China, IL was about 4 boring assholes dealing with wacky & bizarreATHF-esque plot devices thrown at them because they thought it was funny.

KOTH is grat and I try to watch it every time is on adult swim, but it's over so Rick & Morty still stands as the best animated show CURRENTLY on tv. at least in my book. Mike Tyson Mysteries is fucking fantastic as well, a very close second. I haven't seen the venture bros since I was a kid so I can't compare it unfortunately
