One made people lower their expectations the other made them impervious to anything not Nolan. It's a fresh start either way. The MCU has you by the balls with it's episodic nature. DC has one other film in the franchise.
You add that to critical bashing in this digital age and is not a rich scenario to start anew. It made as much as it could with the reputation it got. While international surely took a hit the biggest impact was the domestic revenue.
