The Wire is hipsterdom incarnate. It's a good show, but certainly not the best. It has horrible pacing, the seasons are uneven, it beats you over the head with its message, etc.
People watch it so they can sound smart at dinner parties, suggest it to others, and then chide them for "not getting it" when they inevitable give up after the first 1-4 episodes.

breaking bad was a lot more entertaining desu. sopranos had no direction at all, it was just people interacting in a very emotionally stunted manner and mulling over their problems instead of solving them
breaking bad on the other hand? guy gets cancer and immediately turns his life around. not only that, he has to face off with men infinitely more experienced and dangerous than he is. what did tony ever do at the end of each season? oh yeah, whack another hotheaded capo who just happened to be the crew's top earner every single time. there's only so many times you can use that excuse to produce another filler episode

I think Twin Peaks, The Wire, Breaking Bad, The Shield, Six Feet Under and Boardwalk Empire are all great, but I rarely find myself reminiscing about them the way I do with the other two.
