I met this guy a couple when I was young. If you've ever read his autobiography he talks about selling and doing hard drugs and sleeping with a rifle for fear of retaliation from other dealers.
I think giving talks at schools and living with wild animals was therapeutic for him, but he knew he was going to die eventually. No one had any illusions about the danger of living with 600+ lb bears when they were trying to get fat for hibernation.

The way he operated showed complete disregard for those bears. He refused to respect their territories, their personal boundaries, and deliberately tried to habituate them to human contact.
