television is a superior medium for storytelling, film is superior for conveying moods and themes.

Beginnings and Conclusions are essential to storytelling. The unpredictable nature of television renewals forces the arc of a story to be stretched or cut short. Rare is the serial that spans an appropriate length of time. Take House of Cards which started out strong and has flounders in more recent seasons with a lack of direction. Each season must be cut and pruned to be cohesive in the larger series while also following it's own discrete narrative. As successful at juggling those two notions the show has been it still must grapple with it's inevitable ending which must be tied in retrospectively with the opening of the show.

A story may be successfully spun despite these circumstances but film will always allow the beginning and end to be considered together.

To your other point, a TV series affords more time to peruse a theme but in general this expects a level of commitment to a show that writers/directors won't always give.

Of course TV has artistic merit. There is a perceptible change in how actors play characters over the course of seasons. Does film miss out on this sort of method acting? Of course not! But television naturally forms it where as movies depend on the commitment and talent of their patron celebrities. Beyond the acting, character development has more room to build in a TV show. Depths of an individual can be explored as they face challenge after challenge from episode to episode. The Office is an example of both the dramatic change in acting and of character growth. Steve Carell starts with an apx impression of Ricky Gervais before becoming his own version 'the Boss' who is goofy and compassionate. The writers guide him along with the other characters into scenarios where their nature is revealed. The organic creation of characters leads to interactions that have thought and history behind them adding a depth that cannot be included in a 2 hour movie.

There's not a whole lot of good television, but there is some. Fargo season 2 was fantastic; better than any season of the Sopranos.

character development and story arcs that isn't possible with a standalone film, when done right you develop a deep connection with them and become highly invested in a way that a movie simply cannot replicate
