It was announced today that they are turning the Wheel of Time series into a television series.

Time for GoT-fags to experience some real high fantasy.

>>68869751
HOLY SHIT YES
>>
Seriously? Finally some straightforward fantasy instead of this deconstruction shit
>>
Which channel?
>>
>>68869751

LOTS proved you don't need good source material to make a fun show. Unless they decide to go the grimdark route to compete with GoT in which case it will be shit
>>
>>68869898

>implying they won't adapt the trilogy everyone likes, a slight amount of the middle fluff and then jump right to the ending.

They aren't going to do 25 seasons of TV, they'll do the highlight moments.

I'm torn I remember starting this series and hating most of the female cast never finished it tho, might give the show a shot
>>
Hope it tanks. What a heap of shite.

>muh worldbuilding

lots =/= good
>>
>>68869751
I couldn't even finish past like 3 chapters of that shit. Same with GoT and LOTR stuff. I fucking love the genre too. But, none of these faggots can write for shit. It is like they styled their pacing from a dictionary.

But, if this is made I hope it is good. Though, I highly doubt they'll fit even that many high lights into it from the books and they will social propagandize them to hell and back. So, expect gender-swapping and race-swapping characters.

>>
honestly surprised more fantasy series based on moderately popular book series arent popping up to get those nice GoT sloppy seconds
>>
>>68869751
Didn't they try this once before? I remember some low budget pilot some time ago. It was the Dragon having gone mad and killed his family talking to Shaitan, I believe.
>>
Berserk live action tv series fucking when
>>
>>68870243
It's about the Force- I mean, the One Power, and the struggle between the light side and the dark side- I mean the female side and the male side.
>>
>>68870260
None of them are as good as ASOIAF, including this garbage
>>
I don't want my precious WoT getting any more publicity because it will just attract even more morons who don't have the capability to comprehend the series' utter perfection. Sandersonfags invading the fandom with their massive retardation and poor taste was bad enough. Not this. Please not this.
>>
>>68870517
STFU

Sanderson saved the series from dying
>>
>>68870115
WoT is the definition of a slow starter. The first three books are the most boring cliche shitfests you've ever read. Of the three main female characters, one gets good in book 7, another in book 11, and the third is always trash.
>>
>>68870517
>Utter perfection

I am going to be very generous and say the first six books are exactly that. That leaves 5 shitty books (8 if you hate Sanderson) How is that perfection?
>>
B-but what if it gets the Shannara treatment?
>>
>>68870709
SHUT
THE
FUCK
UP
>>
>>68870572
No, you.

WoT critics are braindead farm animals who bleat memecriticisms they've heard others repeating. They're uniformly too stupid, dumb, and idiotic to understand even the plot-theme of the series. I'm sick and tired of mouthbreathers shitting on great things.

Cancel this series Harriet. You don't have good judgment. You hired Sanderson. You killed Bela. Stop it. Stop ruining a perfect series.

>>68870680
No, it leaves memes grandfathered in from a time when people had to wait 3 years between books and didn't appreciate the pacing. There are no shitty books besides Sanderson's abortions. "Homicide"? "Saidared"? In a serious which previously had a timeless quality? Mormon fucking scum.
>>
Is Malazan Book of the Fallen a better series?
>>
So what channel? I am guessing syfy.
>>
>>68870736
>MTV Shannara fag confirmed
>>
It's too big of a book series.
>>
>>68870243
First two books are LOTR'esque
>>
>>68870791
"Nothing happening" is not an opinion on the pacing, it is reality. And nobody could save the series, Sanderson didn't need to pay attention to the details and dialogue style of a trainwreck

>>68870793
It has better writing, and at least tries to be original instead of ripping off Tolkein and Dune like the hack work that is WoT
>>
>>68870791
Of course Harriet doesn't have good judgement. Look at all the shit she let through serving as Robert's editor. Half of the series is filler waiting for other characters drive the plot.

>>
>>68871507
nah, the aiel are ethnically Celtic, but culturally a mix of arabs and native americans.

RJ did this with most of his cultures, such as the Cairhein being a mix of France and Japan, or the Seanchan being imperial china but speaking with Texan accents.

The only one that's really played straight is Andor which is England and the two rivers which is the shire minus small people

Rand's harem is easily in the top 5 most cringey things in WoT. Aviendha is retarded mainly because of the tsundere aspect and Elayne is a cunt. Min is one of the few tolerable female characters.

They're not described as sand niggers physically at all.

Aiel = Celts before being conquered by the English, semi-nomadic lifestyle, Pict warriors.
Andor = Anglo Saxons/British (Elizabethan era)
Cairhien = Ancien Regime French
Tear = Castilian Spain
Altara = Sicilian/Italian
Arad Doman = Pre Islamic Arabs (note the descriptions of diaphanous clothings, and coppery skin
Saldaea = Mongols
Kandor = Cossacks
Arafel = Central Asian Turkic People
Shienar/Malkier = Norsemen
Tarabon = Persians? Kind of weird, they talk about wearing facial veils and women make braided hair with beads in it, but there are blondes with blue eyes in them.

Shara = Africa
Seafolk = Poo in Loos
Seanchan = East Asians
>>
>>68872694
Sea folk are Pacific Islanders, not Indians.
>>
First Law >>>>>>>>>>> Wheel of Shit

wasn't this already a show starring that one bald guy that was handsome in the 90's?
>>
What's so good about it? I mean in particular, what exactly did you like about the books specifically?

From what I read about it it sounds like the most generic fantasy tripe imaginable.
The kind of stuff that diminishes the entire genre.

I always hear people mentioning it as one of the best series fantasy has to offer but they never get into specifics of why it is great and I've never see anyone discuss the story or the lore or even the characters.
>>
>>68872939
that was a Fantastic 4 tier attempt to keep the rights, apparently that shit has been sorted out
>>
>>68872962
it's basically just the most soap opera high fantasy story there is. Not really bad, not really great, but once you start it is a struggle to put it down

it is a frustrating start, but once it gets going it is a wild ride

It was a great time sink during my NEET days. It gave me extra nerd cred. The main character is actually pretty enjoyable during the middle when he's paranoid. Another main character is fun after the first few books and until Sanderson starts writing. There are a handful of badass scenes that are magnified by the large amounts of downtime.
>>
>>68872858

Their leader was Rand al'Thor, the Car'a'carn, who's described as having blue eyes, fair skin, and auburn hair.

Or are you talking about Rhuarc, the clan chieftan of the Taardad Aiel who was also described as having red hair, but with a touch of grey at the temples.

Hopefully a premium channel, it's not as gritty as ASOIAF, but there's a lot of descriptions of people being scantily clad, there's sex in it, boozing and carousing and fucking tavern wenches, it's just not actual prostitution like in ASOIAF.

Hopefully it gets treated better than Shannara, who got put onto MTV so it's rated TV-14 which pretty much makes it shit.
>>

>>
>>68872962

The interesting aspects about it are the elements of reincarnation and time going in cycles (people are reborn over and over again, they might have different names but there are heroes that keep getting reborn that always have certain elements about them that are consistant through rebirth, like Birgitte Silverbow has been known by 100's of names over 100's of lives, but she's always a beautiful woman who wears her hair in a golden braid, is a deadeye with a bow, and likes ugly men), the fact that it may be a post apocalyptic future earth with some of the old stories from the age before the last age being like Len, who flew in the belly of an eagle of fire to the moon (John Glenn), or the giants Mosc and Merk, who fought each other with lances of fire that could reach around the world (Moscow and America)

I also like how they describe the magic system, with its powers being divided into male and female sides and how they work together in links.
>>
>>68873573
I think it's more that afterwards, his Lews Therin voice would flip the fuck out in confined spaces. Which brings up the question of how exactly they're going to do the "voice in my head" shit

I fear it's going to be shit. There will be terrible casting decisions, and even if they do better than expected the characters will not look how you imagined, and their accents will be butchered. Everything will be smaller and drabber than it should be. Everyone will wear the same costumes. The trollocs will look gay (I'm really really hoping they don't fuck up myrdraal). The dialogue will be more obviously terrible with real people saying it. Most of the plotlines, characters and locations will be cut for brevity. And you will hate it by season 5, by which time the wise women will have killed the effete rhuarc and bael (and the rest of the clan chiefs) because 'the aiel will never be ruled by WEAK MEN again'.
>>

Ah, to me God Emperor of Dune is the focus of the whole series. The first three books lead into it, and the last two expand out from it.

Leto II needed to become the most powerful person in existence, a literal God-Emperor. He deliberately held back and controlled the human species in order to guarantee their survival. Without him humans were liable to stagnate or kill themselves off. But he held a tight grip on humanity until its need to grow and expand exploded. When he died, there was nothing to hold people in and they exploded across the universe in the Scattering (and it's actually implied that they travelled into other universes as well).

Leto II left behind a legacy of tyranny, but he also guaranteed the infinite survival of the human species, though he had to sacrifice his humanity and his life to do so.

It's basically the story of Trump. Or at least that's how I see it.
>>
I just hope there would be a Malazan or The Black Company adaptation in my lifetime.
>>
>>68870240
No one dies. The universe is a cycle of death and rebirth. Even balefire victims eventually are respun into the pattern.

The main characters have literal plot armor and deus ex machina devices. They are reborn heroes and also they are acting out something that already happened before and will again, and also they are ta'veren.

This series is impossible to understand unless you are a 32nd degree mason but you didn't even try, dumb frogposter. You did not even try.

>Even balefire victims eventually are respun into the pattern.
Do you have a single satisfact to snack that up
>>
>>68874663
There's sex and gore but it's not graphic descriptions and the story is an amalgamation of various coming of age and hero's journeys that appeal to a younger audience. It has a very childlike portrayal of politics and tragedy.

Seanchan was a melting pot. Seanchan are described as everything from blond-haired blue-eyed aryans to coal-black negroes.

It was a melting pot because Seanchan was literally America. Hawkwing intended to found a new land,
>not connected in any man’s mind with any old cause or faction or rivalry. Here, he’d build it, at the very center of the land bordered by the seas and the Waste and the Blight. Here, where no Aes Sedai would ever come willing or could use the Power if they did. A capital from which, one day, the whole world would receive peace and justice.

LITERALLY AMERICA.

It's not graphically described as Tyrion touching Shae's nipples and them getting hard no, but it isn't just "Aviendha and Rand kiss, then fade to black" either. It's sex, with description just .. softcore rather than hardcore description.

There's also Trollocs dismembering people and throwing them in cookpots.

I mean, the way I'd see it, Wheel of Time would be rated R, Game of Thrones NC-17 if they were doing it as film rather than TV. But both should be TV-MA.

Rand: Maybe you could tell me what this is all about.

Moiraine: You will know what you need to know. The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills.

Rand: Thanks.

Egwene: This is scary! Rand al'Thor! You got me into this!

Rand: Gee whiz, Egwene.

Moiraine: Dreams can be dangerous. Have you all had any scary dreams?

Mat: I don't know if we can trust Aes Sedai. Let's keep it a secret.

Rand and Perrin: Good idea

I think you're missing the forest for the trees.

It's ultimately young adult fiction and there are things you can get away with in young adult literature that you can't in young adult television.

Take Dumai's Wells, for example. They could just have screams and the sound people make when they explode off screen as the camera slow zooms on Rand's face as he sees the carnage his creations have wrought. I wouldn't see that as watered down.

>>68876270
But book seven is an awesome companion to six so I don't understand why any objective reader today would dislike it. Sure, readers at the time had to wait years to a sequel to Lord of Chaos and raged when they got new characters and plotlines instead of the resolution they childishly demanded, but in perspective, boy is book seven entertaining. Cadsuane is one of the best characters in the series despite her late introduction; she's not only great in and of herself but also introduces new angles of conflict which help develop Rand especially as well as other characters. Moridin, which fandom raged over, wasn't even really a new character. Best not to keep propagating old memes from that time. Best to consider the series using your own judgment.

No rational person could dislike book seven. Rand's encounter with Ordeith alone is worth the read, and that's just a small scene. Amazing book, amazing series, no experts here but me.

I wasn't going to list ALL the cultural inspirations, I couldn't really think of what Murandy, Amadicia, and Ghealdan or Far Madding were inspired by.

The things I listed were just more clear, though sometimes there's multiple influences such as >>68876183

points out that there's some Asian influence to the Shienarans, there's a Bushido like warrior code and they wear their hair in Han Chinese like Topknots.

Sometimes Jordan just put people in places that didn't make so much sense geographically, like the coppery skinned Domani living almost as far north as the Blight, and being somewhat of borderlanders, when they're Arab inspired.

Lord of the Rings had NO sexuality in it whatsoever in the books. It's portrayal of relationships is basically this guy's married to this girl, and these are there children, that's it.

There's also not a lot of violence in it, I mean there's wars and battles, but not a lot of description of gore. There's descriptions of the arms and armor, but that's about it.

>>
>>68876627

I don't think they will need to do shit like that because there are explicitly different ethnicities in the books, and among some groups like Aes Sedai, Warders, and Asha'men, they are in positions of power.

There's no need to make Siuan Sanche a black woman, not when Leane Sharif, her keeper, is an Arab woman. with coppery skin.

There's no need to force an interracial relationship in the show.. not when there's a canon interracial relationship in the book between a white man, and a black woman (Mat Cauthon and Tuon, the Daughter of the Nine Moons). If they stay faithful to the books there will be plenty of diversity and "progressive" shit.

>>
>>68877098
here's some proofs chicken
>Who came up with Raistlin?

Raistlin simply appeared during an early playtest session of the first Dragonlance module at my apartment in Lake Geneva. Terry Phillips, a good friend of mine, was playing Raist that night in the game and pulled out all the stops, creating the character fully realized before us. To this day, Margaret remembers Terry as wearing black robes that night -- which, I know for a fact, he was not.
After that -- well, Raistlin belongs to Margaret. I wouldn't dare presume upon that and you would be well advised not to do so as well!
>>
>>68877141

>>
>>68876871
The point is that Shannara sucked for the terrible dialog, acting, effects, cinematography, etc. Not because of it's TV-14 rating.

Just have the more violent and sexual moments happen off screen. Like when Rand first fucks Elayne. Shot of her dress falling around her legs, cut to Min and Aviendha blushing and squirming in the hall. That book barely goes into more detail than that anyway. Barely anything is lost. Sex can be implied in a myriad of ways that keeps it appropriate for tone of the story without losing any of the important character moments.

If they manage to get everything else right: the casting, the sets, the effects, the magic, etc, I really don't think a TV-14 rating would be a problem.

INTERVIEW: Nov 21st, 1998 TPOD Signing Report - John Novak (Paraphrased)
JOHN NOVAK [Is balefire the eternal death of the soul?]
ROBERT JORDAN If someone is balefired, the Dark One can't reincarnate them. But they CAN be spun back out into the Wheel as normal. Balefire is NOT the eternal death of the soul. He also made a comment to the effect that even in the absence of balefire, there may be circumstances where the Dark One cannot bring someone back. There was a long line, so I didn't press.

Malazan is a better series than WoT, but that doesn't say much. Everyone I know who's read WoT kept reading past book 5-6 because of one character only. Malazan in a vacuum is good, but not spectacular: characters are all over the place, writing is... wordy to put it mildly, world building is fucking awesome and the story isn't neatly explained in a series of expositions so it's hard to fully grasp everything until the second or third book are done.

>>68871958
Writing out Elayne and tsundere aiel bitch would greatly improve the plot. Reading "I don't need to be careful because I'm Homer Simpson! I mean, I don't need to be careful because I'm protected by prophecy!" for like 5 fucking books is rage inducing.

Not canon. RJ always made it clear when a character was black by describing them as "coal dark". Tuon was just described as dark which he used to describe lot's of people darker than a typically white person. Nynaeve was also descried that way.

This is made clear because Tuon's introduction is very closely followed by Anath's who is black.
