Shes paranoid schizophrenic since (or due to) the death of her husband. Probably added to isolation, grief and maybe even post-partem depression.
Her social ostracism and her job (added sleep deprivation) make her mania increase in episodes, which eventually create an alternate persona, which culminates in making the book and even killing the dog, also trying to kill her son.
Its essentially about neurosis.

Its probably a metaphor for "keeping her episodes under control", by doing a routine/medicine/therapy.
If you want to interpret it literally, then its like when a person with severe OCD does a ritual to "calm down".
Think of it like literally keeping the monster at bay, by literally feeding it and since the monster eats worms, she literally eats worms to keep her "other person", or "monster" at bay.
