he wants to tell stories with his pet themes using the iconography of DC superheroes
i think he sees it like he's making something like dark knight returns, red son, etc, where it's not the "real superman" but an appropriation of the image for its cultural connotations in a different story
so with man of steel, he wanted to tell a story about reconciling his faith in a christ with his objectivist worldview, ie "how can someone be selfless in a purely selfish world?"
i think it's lame and selfish of snyder to do this, but at the same time accusing him of not understanding superman is missing the point entirely

It's the same shit as Sin City or 300 where it's basically just a slideshow of live-action comic book panels lifted directly from the source material. That works for a stylish action flick, but not for something that actually has any sort of themes or meaning behind it.
