I guess Stillman just isn't for me. I liked Metropolitan a bit more, but still, somewhat chuckle-worthy one liners every five minutes just isn't what I'd call very entertaining, man.

been meaning to see Make Way For Tomorrow (especially after having seen and loved Tokyo Story). I ought to get to it asap. strong disagree on Victoria though, I thought it was 2+ hours of bullshit filmmaking.

I seem to have enjoyed Victoria a lot more than the rest of the letterboxd contingent. I've noticed people seem to get a massive stick up their ass (not implying anything about yourself) about formal and technical mishaps in bravado pieces of filmmaking like Victoria. I appreciated it for the acting, tension, and WKW-esque first 40 minutes as well as the logistical difficulties of making a film in that manner.
Make Way for Tomorrow is a very nice little Old Hollywood film but don't expect anything nearly as complex or ambivalent as Tokyo Story. As an aside, the more I watch films with Thomas Mitchell the more I'm convinced he's the greatest character actor of all time.

it is insane how angry people consistently get about this. Letterboxd is just a film diary website, you can use as much or as little of the functionality as you want. You don't have to follow any body, if it upsets you that people don't rate then just ignore them
Why don't people get angry at people who don't write reviews for every movie? There's the functionally right there on the site, lots of people do review movies, and it makes your profile less useful to the reader if you don't, what are you some sort of special snowflake or something???????

I liked how the script used the language barrier between the characters and can certainly admite it on a technical level, but the film was such a mess. clear cut case of prioritizing form over narrative, which I can't pretend I'm too fond of: the film was a slog and I can only assume it was the result of the logistics involved (traveling back and forth without cutting the shot). nah, not for me.
