Both the kids and Lois are assholes. None of them are willing to compromise for the other. Lois is a shreiking unrelenting uncompromising bitch of a mother and the kids are just trouble making brats without a conscious.

Hal is a really rare example of an even handed sitcom depiction of an average father done right. He's not just a bumbling idiot or a strict hardline stereotype and its clear that he really loves his family. Hal is incredibly relate-able to dads everywhere.
