Well, the good news is that the liver is an extremely hardy organ. If you lose <50% of your liver cells (from trauma, not drinking) it can grow back in less than a year.
Scar tissue on the liver isn't much different than scar tissue on the skin. Both the liver and skin are very hardy organs (they have to be). Your body doesn't recognize scar tissue on the liver as being "gone" though, just dead, and it can't fix that.
