I will admit I've never seen any of the other star wars movies, and used this as my entry into the series, but to be honest you could have fooled me and told me this was made in the 1980s and flopped, going down as one of the series biggest failures. She was supposedly some powerful character but it was as easy as anything to point a gun at her, get her to disable the entire ship's security then force her into a trash compactor. Hmm, I was deliberately cynical, didn't understand the hype and expected total OT nostalgia riding, but even I didn't expect it to be such a lazy repeat of ANH.
Lack of any experimentation hurts it, I think. Every Star Wars film was different (even if ROTJ repeated the Death Star plot point, the way to resolve it was different and it wasn't a race against the clock like in ANH). Even if I didn't like AOTC, I could still applaud every film of the franchise for being different. The only piece of originality TFA brings is the girl protagonist, and even that was sort of covered by TPM, where there is no one "hero journey" except for Padme's, but TPM was a kid film, so nobody noticed it.

"True Star Wars Style" is a subjective thing. The directors of VII and VIII don't even agree on that.
The duckling effect usually works with the fans, and when fans become the creators (hey jay jay) they happen to harp on "True Style" that they have seen instead of experimenting. The only "style" George ever described for Star Wars is "a family drama in space", otherwise each film is not like the other.

I think the main division point is whether or not ROTS is good or not. I dunno, I think ROTS is better than ROTJ even (I really hated the Jabba shenanigans, with ugly aliens eating each other, and the ewoks, and the Endor Battle in general), but overall, I think most fans can agree that something went wrong with AOTC and TPM.

That being said I enjoyed TFA. I actually really enjoyed Boyegas performance. I can see why people criticize it saying that it copied too much from the OT, but I can also understand why JJ wanted to keep it as close to the originals as he can for his first outing. Really the only thing that annoyed me about TFA is that it at times seemed like it was a pissing contest between the originals.

Kershner or Marquand weren't there to really leave their mark since Lucas was breathing down their neck all the time (the very same reason there was no way Lucas could have been involved with TFA because it wouldn't have worked creatively). The directors for ESB and ROTJ were essentially traffic cops directing a tv show. The differences (if any) would be marginal had Lucas directed them, because he practically directed them.
the only collaboration involved are with the technical artists which Lucas also directs and cherry picks from their material.
the major differences in ANH and ESB/ROTJ is that ANH had small edits done to the script to add punch lines and humour by American Graffiti co-writers. These were slowly phased out through ESB and ROTJ because they weren't necessary according to Lucas.
