What's the point of trying? Most can agree these movies are classic, but you can literally never create a definitive list from every movie ever made. This list is just some random film buff's personal favorites.

I think Tetsuo belongs there for basically creating modern J-Horror and being the most famous Japanese Cyberpunk movie. Also Tokyo Story should belong there too.

I could never rank those movies in a strict order.
But those are without a doubt 50 great movies. Most of them essentials, that everybody should see

As has been said, this isn't exactly a "patrician" list. It's all movies you've heard about if you've been into movies for more than 4 months. No doubt they're essential, but something like pic related does a better job of creating a guide to less accessible and "more patrician" films. Even if you don't agree with the movies, take note of the directors; more like them should be there rather than the usual Scorcese and Kubrick. Anyone interested in really digging into film has at least heard about them, if not seen them. You need to take it to the next level.

>Heaven Can Wait Lubitsch, 1943)
>The Princess Bride
>Star Wars (1977)

>Metropolis
>The Night of the Hunter
>King Kong (1933)
>Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
>Psycho
>Tron
>Toy Story
I know some are a bit iffy, I guess dump those ones.

Personally I would also remove The Searchers, Grand Illusion and The Rules of the Game, but other than that it's a solid list.
>>
>>68845529
>'not only an insult to good film taste as it is an insult to the early cinema movies'

no baseball carding, just questioning a weird opinion
>>
>>68845503
Metropolis is the first movie to use special effects. Citizen Kane is the first modern style of movie. Movies should be about being above and beyond, not just mundane. So one is about making art, the other is about recreating life. To me, Metropolis is still closer to modern cinema then CitKane because we never really had Metropolis to compare it to until more recently. I know it's weird, but still Metropolis is the first movie for having special effects. That's just a staple of a good movie.

If not then any documentary could be seen as an amazing film.
>>
>>68845550
UNDERAGE DETECTED.
MODS. MOOOODS.
>>
The top 80.

Like a lot of comments have noted, this is more of a rough draft rather than a definitive order of the top 100, much needs to be sorted.

As always, voice what you like or what you don't like, I want this list to be a good consensus of what films everyone who browses /film/ should see.
>>
>>68845627
Any particular entry you find to be indicative of an underage poster or are you just being annoying?

I'm happy to explain any of the picks.
>>
>>68845019

Seems about right to me. It's not like anything worthy of being on the list has come out in the past three years.
>>
>>68845496
You're right, it's not, but you're making a self proclaimed "patrician list". This list is fine for anyone starting out, but for those wishing to develope their taste further, most of these films will have already been seen/heard of, and not really out of their comfort zone.

What's the point in creating an entry level guide that matches what every single Top 100-1000 film list out there is going to stress you watch? If anything you should Make a Top 100 list and filter out the most popular, then add other stuff that is underrated.

>>
>>68846883
I would be very interested in more specific lists. Most people tend to have a special genre or era, where they know the most about. You can be "patrician" at one thing, but entry level at another. so maybe things like

>french cinema
>classic monster movies
>japan core
>sci fi worldwide
>deconstruction
>....
>>
>>68846997

My point is that no one who sees the list will be being introduced to it. It's a waste of space, as are many others on the list. I mean, fucking 2001? No shit if I want to get into movies I'm going to watch 2001. This is entry level pleb shit aside from some foreign language picks.

A more interesting list would be overlooked and underrated classics and emerging talents.
>>
>>68847009
>liking Breathless

I can forgive everything else, but this marks you as a man of shit taste. Literally any other movie from French New Wave is better, Goddard is just pretentious fuckwad
>>
>>68846973
I really think you don't understand film.

The Social Network and Breathless are both some of the best edited and structured films ever made, they use Soviet montage in an artistic and entertaining form.

Vertigo is a brilliant innovation of cinematography to create a physical representation of characters emotions, it's pure genius.

And if you don't understand The Apartment then there's really no helping you.
>>
Man i love how /tv/ will trash the imdb top 250 yet vote the same films in their lists every time

>A more interesting list would be overlooked and underrated classics and emerging talents.

Sure it would be more interesting, it would also be more interesting if I only picked Japanese films shot on budgets of less than $200,000, but that defeats the purpose.

This is meant to be a foundation, something to watch before you ask for recommendations. This will give you a taste of many different genres so that you can then ask for deeper recommendations. I'd love to add Floating Weeds or Yi Yi, but those are films that are tucked into their niches and have to be discovered through exploring the wider genre first.
>>
>>68844585
I didn't take the time to look at the gigantic images in these threads but here are some that should definitely be on there:
>2001: A Space Odyssey (which I see is on there)
>A Clockwork Orange
>The Shining
>Room 237 (then watch The Shining again, do an anagram for "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" to find the terms "play" "moon" "land" "backwards", listen to moon landing recordings backwards, and eventually discover the hidden message about the moon landing being faked)
>Every Kubrick film - Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket, take an entire weekend on just Kubrick films and interviews with him and the documentary Room 237. Do something similar for Alfred Hitchcock, and maybe Quentin Tarantino if you're in the mood
>I'm Still He
>The Master
>Her

I feel like if you arbitrarily limit yourself to 1 per director you're going to create a lot of argument about a directors best film, and lose out on a lot of great movies from directors who vary their tone and style.
>>
>>68847180
its fucking stupid.
Vertigo not even in Hitchcock's top 5?
come on.
>>
>>68847207
>Citizen Kane
>The Godfather
>Chinatown
>Jaws
All significantly influential landmarks in the history of film.
>>
>>68847077
>the "just cut this shit at random and glue it without any care" is now brilliant editing
>the "let's spend the majority of time on empty dialogues between two vapid cunts" is now a great structure

/tv/ never disappoints.

>Vertigo is pure genius

Lad, there's nothing in Vertigo sans dolly zoom. Even his weaker works like North by Northwest or The Rope have better cinematography. The fact is that it was overhyped by critical community. It's not shit, but not deserving of being on every top list ever as well.

>implying The Apartment is deep
>>
>>68847217

IDGAF about best film, just pick a representative film and acknowledge that it essentially means it's worthwhile checking out everything they do. Even if it's just their debut movie or most popular.
>>
>>68847232
>influence is always good
>>
>>68847225
Vertigo is a boring flick and Hitchcock literally uses the same shitty camera gimmick.

>>68847232

yeah if you are doing this list for your mom you can keep them

Someone gets it,

You can't understand cinema without understanding the landmark films that underpin the collective artform, Citizen Kane and Jaws might be well known films, but they were incredibly innovative for their times and impacted the entire medium in artistic and industrial changes.
>>
>>68844844
>breathless

This list is like all the other lists.

What's the point.

It's worthless.
>>
>>68846944
change Searchers to Stagecoach
>>
>>68847253
I never said that, but if one wanted to understand the growth and evolution of film as a medium, those films would be fairly essential and a good starting point.

still missing
>Seppuku AKA Harakiri
>Såsom i en Spegel AKA Through a Glass Darkly
>Das Boot AKA The Boat
>Kôkaku kidôtai AKA Ghost in the Shell
>>

yes, exactly.
Those lists dont have to be pissing contests

Wait so, is this actually happening ? No memeing ?

Whats the point ?

So i'll have to go to /tv/ for television memes and shit and /film/ for big guys memes ?

Will this not pretty much kill /tv/ ? I'de say its mostly new film chat on /tv/ wirh some GoT, doctor who (fuck knows why) and sopranos sprinkled on top.

Sure.

Then A Hard Day's Night should be on there because even though it's shit it had big influence on the media of film and tv.
>>
>>68847376
No, /tv/ will be for memes, non-HBO shows and capeshit

/film/ will be for kino, cinema and HBO shows such as The Sopranos and BoB that count as extended cinema.

/reddit/ will be for everything else

Reddits top 5 are:
1. Pulp Fiction
2. Fight Club
3. The Shawshank Redemption
4. The Dark Knight
5. Inglourious Basterds

IMDb's top 5 are:
1. Shawshank Redemption
2. The Godfather
3. The Godfather Part II
4. The Dark Knight
5. Schindler's List

Our current top 5 are:
1. Citizen Kane
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
3. Grand Illusion
4. The Searchers
5. 8 1/2

I'd say we're doing pretty well so far

I was tempted to add City Lights and Modern Times, but I feel like all of Chaplin's works flow into each other. I picked The Kid to be a general representation of all his work because I feel like it covers a lot of what his films tried to achieve during his career.

Did you have some suggestions for rearranging the last films?

I really like children (especially little girls) and i feel like they're underrepresented in cinema, especially their sexuality, etc
