I found them both to be pretty good in terms of single episodes (only 1.4 and 2.1 were truly bad), but I have a lot of doubts about the big arc: we're halfway through the story and we've had barely an inkling of what the "doom coalition" could be about. Plus, the way the episodes are tied together feels very forced, like the way the Doctor and his companions go on a holiday after meeting the Eleven only to stumble upon a clue that leads them on the trail of the Eleven's next plan. That's the kind of coincidence that takes you out of the story. River's inclusion also feels pretty pointless so far, but I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt until she turns up again.
Tl;dr: I quite enjoyed it so far, but unless they up their game in the next two boxsets I fear the whole thing might come tumbling down.

That story was actually accused by some of being too right-wing, because of what happens in the timeline where the aliens are accepted. Which is just wrong, as the alternative isn't exactly portrayed as a good outcome either (if anything, it's worse). That seems like a highly impractical and perma-nostalgic venture to hamstring the series into performing.
Also, unlike literally every other classic companion, Sarah Jane had some kind of lasting cultural footprint due to being in the orbit of Tom Baker while he was getting good episodes. As much as it pains me to say it, if you tried to make a big deal out of "Jamie returns!" or "Ace returns!" you would not get nearly as many people's interest.

I'm still fond of the theory that this is all a ruse to confound the Terry Nation estate. Even the wording of that Andy Pryor quote, if you picked it apart, gives the BBC all the necessary loopholes.

They could easily claim that he meant "the clip was already written for Series 10, and in 'writing' the audition piece Steven adjusted it". Even the use of the term 'clip' suggests it's part of something larger, as opposed to what it actually is.

I've seen all of series 9, and I saw the Christmas special.
I actually agree that series 9 largely wasn't worth a damn. Only good episodes were Under the Lake and Heaven Sent. The Christmas special was surprisingly fun.

I think it's more weird that everyone suddenly turned on UTL. I remember the live threads as these episodes aired, and UTL received a lot of praise. Everyone thought the second part was disappointing, though.

>>68872254 here, I actually didn't hate Under the Lake on transmission (although it is full of fucking flimsy elements like the co-ordinates, and is ultimately a runaround that I wouldn't dream of putting above things like the Dalek eps, the Zygon eps, Face the Raven or even the Maisie eps). I liked some of the charming elements like the Doctor getting told off in sign language. But it's the rare episode that actually suffers retroactively when you watch the second part and realise there was nothing to anchor any of the fluff in the first.
