By the secind fight Luke had more time to train with Yoda, and one of the peculiar things about this training was that we never see Yoda teaching Luke better lightsaber technique, in fact a scene was removed showing this very thing. The training was to have a better understanding of the force to better wield it. Lightsaber combat was enhanced by better control of the force.
Also Luke was always training with his lightsaber, so he learned to use it as a tool the way you would use a knife, but it's only when he was better trained in the force that he could use it as a weapon in lightsaber combat and we see him best Vader the way he did.
