I wonder if this will be popular. The mystery element and nostalgia bait are ratings bringers, but the prior watching of a 25 year old show needed as well as the intense weirdness will turn off at least some potential new viewers. The former also makes me wonder if they'll have a recap special before the first episode, like Lost used to do.
But whether it's profitable or not I doubt we'll get more, at least from Lynch. He hasn't directed anything in a while, and I bet this was just something he felt he had to do since it had been left incomplete for two and a half decades.
