I haven't seen it because of this, but I'm guessing something similar to "It Follows," where it tickles critics' fancy for certain techniques and tropes, but actually is mediocre.
>>
>>68768619
This is absolutely a case of uninformed younger audiences going in and expecting something like The Conjuring. I'm not even holding it against them. Movies like The Witch rarely get a wide theatrical release.

The average ratings for both of those movies is pretty fair though. Stop looking only at the percentage.
>>
She didn't have hairy pits.

No, It Follows had suspense, and characters you could passably be interested in.

This was just dull, dull, dull.

>>68769445
I don't hold that against them though. That's just the type of horror movie they're used to seeing in theaters every fall. Low budget horror movies like The Witch usually get a limited theatrical release and then show up on Netflix or on demand cable.

The movie is about dialogue yet you can't understand 70% of what is said.

Critics probably watched with captions.

To be fair some of it is hard to understand. Don't know if it was just the sound mix in my theater but some of the dialogue was difficult to make out.

Saw it in the theatre.
>>
>>68769815
Dude, I'm from rural Pennsylvania and white as can be. Like I said, my theater might just have a shitty sound system.
>>
>>68769882
Nah, the accents were too thick.
>>
>>68769978
I liked that they had northern accents. Watched it in glasgow, was a somewhat arty theatre so the audience was appreciative. Was worried about seeing this in theatre after reports of normies moaning through all the showing- that was probably just Americans

Yeah people went in expecting jump scares and gore. I didn't know what to expect but I ended up really enjoying it. 10/10 ending, surprised they went that route.
>>
Saw this movie in theatres. Here are some reasons I did not enjoy it:
1. Music was odd and oddly used. It would have weird spooky music over a scene like a field where nothing would happen, linger for 10 seconds, and then go to the next scene. Just made me raise my eyebrows.

2. It was not scary. Granted, it wasn't supposed to be more than likely, but it wasn't scary. Nor was it thrilling, compelling, interesting, or enjoyable.

3. The story was just boring.

On the plus side: It was probably quite realistic for a sort of New England folktale about a witch; though I immediately started wondering if people (especially commoners like them) said 'thou' and 'thy' in casual every day conversation.

It was just boring and not enjoyable to watch. It's as simple as that. This is independently of how good the movie might have been made (and sure, it looked fine). Just not fun to watch. Not fun to sit there and have this movie happen to you for two hours.
>>
>>68769439

And a terrible script too
>>
>>68770400

The story had good highs, but really, really mediocre lows. Saw it with my girlfriend in theaters and it just didn't really do anything interesting; it was just kind of a generic, really poor suspense.

>Is she the witch???

Well obviously not. We've been following her POV.

>WHO IS THE WITCH????

It's the woman in the woods. She's clearly a witch. That's what tripped me up, and confuses the plot and makes it far less entertaining.
>>
Young witch was hot as balls.
>>
>>68770505
I don't remember any 'highs'.
Yes, obviously there was a witch and the Devil. The whole point is that it is a folktale of the time and that is the only time where people would more or less 'buy' a witch a legitimate villain. It fits the time period.

It's just not enjoyable.
>>
>>68770207
My post here >>68769629 was in the UK. I think normies everywhere were moaning throughout the film.

Same thing happened with Babadook. Literally heard someone say "not enough jump scares" to their friend.

This would be a great movie to discuss on /film/.

A board where anons who have seen Bergman could have a reasonable discussion of this exercise in translating his style to low budget horror.
>>
>>68770975
/film/ is going to have the same audience as /tv/
>>
>>68771048

>>
>>68769191
Basically this
>>
>>68770400
Where did you copy paste this from?
>>
>>68771092
The majority of the threads on /film/ will be "Is X a film or flick?" or more memes
>>
>>68768619
None of you have posted the god tier booty webm yet. The fuck is wrong with you faggots?
>>
>>68768743
That's why no critics gave it negative reviews, because it was interesting. But it wasn't outstanding either.
>>
>>68769882
>>68769978
This. It was the thick accents, the dialect, the sound mixing and the way they spoke in an older english with the speech patterns of modern english. It wasn't the usual regal period piece way of speaking but quick, natural dialogue. I enjoyed that part a lot but huge chunks of dialogue were hard to make out
>>
>>68771239

I'm not sure what the point of a /film/ would be if they allowed the same "flick / kino" bullshit memes that ruined this board and created a need for /film/.

Not that I think you're wrong or that it's not gonna happen.
>>
>>68771407
I swear Hiro is taking it as one board for tv and one for movies, meaning Star Wars and Avengers gets moved to /film/. Here's hoping it hasn't popped up yet because at least one mod understands the point of /film/ and is working things out
>>
God I really do hate normies. People like to blame the industry for all the shitty redundant movies that come out, but it really is the audiences fault for being dumbass idiots who hate being challenged.

Well, the problem is that you can't ban people for having shit taste.
They're splitting the boards to separate movies and TV series, not movies and films.
>>

>anyone who disagrees with me is wrong lelel XDDD!!!
>>
>>68772011
>Well, the problem is that you can't ban people for having shit taste.

Self moderation in the form of elitism keeps shit taste and pleb posters out. That's how /tv/ was until like two years ago. That's how /lit/ and /mu/ still are (mostly).
>>
>>68772150
but you can't expect any sort of elitism on a board that's mostly about capeshit, star wars, ecelebs and popular TV series
imagine if /mu/ only discussed Justin Bieber and One Direction
>>

Same thing happened in my theater except the kids were black / jewish sjws who then went home and lynched themselves out of shame and my theater was filled with pure show white qts who then took turns sucking my cock out of gratitude. I think there were also a handful of older WWII vets in their full uniforms who saluted as I walked out.

Look, it's clearly a movie made for people who watch a lot of film and want something different than shit like Paranormal Activity or Insidious.

Indie Horror probably isn't your thing, but to me this is ten times better than the movies I previously mentioned.
>>
>>68768619
It's a shit poseur film
people who like it can't tell when decent cinematography is compensating for shit story telling
it's mediocre amateur garbage filled with pretentious cliches and comical horror imagery
>>
>>68770400
>have this movie happen to you for two hours

Unless your watching garbage movies don't just "happen to you. You have actually attempt to engage with and think about what your seeing.

This whole 'sit back and turn your brain off' attitude has phased almost all good films out of multiplexes.
>>
>>68768743
This movie is 80% sleepy hipster garbage and 20% scary.
>>
>>68771351
I'd agree - Ralf Ineson giving it some Olde English could be difficult in parts for some American ears. Especially as he has a much deeper northern accent than the usual quick, higher luvvie accent.
>>
>>68770400
>I immediately started wondering if people (especially commoners like them) said 'thou' and 'thy' in casual every day conversation.

Thou, thee and thy were very common parlance amongst my grandparents generation and for a significant number of my parents generation in the Northern England working class town I was raised in.

Definitely not posh or upper class. It was a coal mining town.
