I was actually wondering this during the movie. He and the love interest both talk like something's wrong with them, like they're autistic robots or something. At first I thought it was just the director trying desperately to make the characters seem deep by giving them a weird detached attitude toward everything, but no all the other characters acted fine, it was just those two. So I gotta think it's intentional.
Maybe they really were both supposed to be fucked up social retards, and their "chemistry" stemmed from them both being weidos who conducted every conversation by staring emotionlessly at the other person and mumbling delayed responses.
