The Sulaco is heading back towards Earth with everyone in deep sleep. The ship encounter an anomaly. Some kinda space distortion. There then entails a sequences whereby we see the ship get caught in the anomaly and there is a 'split' in the fabric of time and space. We see broken fragments of the Alien3 intro and crash landing interspersed with Resurrection. To make it easier for the audience you can have some fancy graphics spelling out the timeline split like a tree growing. Lots of screaming and echoes and other visual/audio shit. Suddenly it goes quiet and we cut back to the Sulaco in the original timeline.
Story continues from there.
This way the audience gets that there were 'other' universes with different plot lines but they don't feel so cheated on the 'let's just ignore everything that went before and 'alien'ate the audience.
No fucking 'it was all a dream' allowed thank you.
Anyhow they get back to Earth. Nothing eventful happens for those years between Aliens and now. But then all hell breaks loose as we learn that Weyland Yutani found a xenomoprh on the ship and had been trying to weaponize them in the years between. Cue Ripley and friends...
