Brienne, as a character, is exactly the same between book and show. Story plays out different, certainly. But the character is exactly the same. She's awesome in both.

Brienne's "failures" typically come from being properly outmatched, or circumstances put her in an inopportune place/time.
Basically, the failings no one could have avoided.
That's part of why she's a good character. Because typically, the hero gets lucky. Or the hero always has perfect timing. But here, Brienne fails and she succeeds, all by her own ability. But no matter what happens, she stays true to her honor. She's the opposite of Dany, clad in plot armor.
