When you read the books and then see the show, you see clearly why it's so fucking cringeworthy to have these "strong female characters" - it's because the directors are shoehorning them in as often and as blatantly as possible in an attempt for recognition and approval.
There were strong female characters in the book, don't get me wrong. They're also subtle and thus it's more rewarding when they do cool shit.
