It was the first Classic Who serial I watched and it was fantastic. I thought it was dumb to have the Dalek trigger the wire so The Doctor didnt have to answer the tough question.

But after seeing The Witch's Familiar, I realise I much prefer that to The Doctor having his cake and eating it too, and retroactively giving Davros "mercy" or whatever.

Yeah, Troughton during his final season was brutal.

Between the sheer amount of stuff with the season 6 team, badly written books and the Doctor and Zoe shitting on Jamie, it was a rough go.

Next burnout period I'm really worried about is Season 19b. The sheer amount of Nyssa boggles the mind.

They are, but with 42 stories between Time Flight and Arc, thats a lot of stuff with no major development for either characters.

and that's all well before the !old Nyssa stuff to.

Granted I actively dread reaching Ace.

The Treloar stuff? I enjoyed them, but the stories were nothing hugely new or different.

I think he does a fine job as Pertwee as the Third Doctor.

I'm looking forward to the next set.

What the christ?
>>
>>68683512

That's one of my personal issues, I really can't reconcile the post survival timelines.

Putting VNAs after BF means she's basically forgotten years of her life in Genesys and the doctor makes no effort to fix it. Which even for a manipulative bastard is cruel.

While putting BF after the VNAs wipes out a ton of her character development.

So yeah, 7/ace is gonna be a bitch.
>>
>>68683760
>Putting VNAs after BF means she's basically forgotten years of her life in Genesys and the doctor makes no effort to fix it
I mean, by the end of the whole BF affair Ace is virtually back to status quo characterisation because post-Gods & Monsters a shit. So I don't see it as too massive a jump from there into the VNAs (other than the fact they obviously don't reference any of what happened).

It certainly seems preferable to literally going from Ace leaving the TARDIS/hopping on her Time Bike all the way back to BF Ace. What's more, going from Lungbarrow all the way back into 'younger 7' stories seems to completely fuck with his progression as well. I don't know what that timeline dude was thinking, unless he literally meant for you to treat them as two irreconcilable timelines and go from one to the other

The RTD and Tennant years were the most successful era of NuWho, UK-ratings wise.
Why can't they achieve this ever again?
>>

Sure.
Hell, the 50th anniversary only got 12 mil. viewers while fucking Voyage of the Damned had like 15 mil.
>>
>>68685093
RTD was better at hyping stuff up and since the show was fresh it still had some novelty.

I think the only way to reach those rating again would be to give it a longer break and then hype up its return (alot) with proven actors and writers

I've noticed that there are more UK fans who miss RTD, Tennant, 10/Rose, all that junk and still want them back 6 years later.
US fans are more likely to be fans of Smith and even Capaldi.
>>
>>68685093
Public liked the home-made shitness and unliterariness of RTD as well as the superhero worship it offered in 10. Moffat suddenly bursting on the scene with cinematic visuals, a consciously uncool Doctor and hubristic ambitions at artistry soured the well forever. Only wider range Doctor Who fans or people who joined during Smith were capable of approaching Doctor Who from a new perspective (let alone a post-structuralist one) and thus DW was condemned never to be water cooler television again, no matter how shit or good it got.

Although who knows, maybe when Chibnall replaces Capaldi with some sex symbol and starts churning out 42-level shit everyone will like it again?

Yes I am implying that, you're welcome. I didn't think it was an item of debate that the 10 era is far more concerned with wanking off his 'wonderfulness' than it is interrogating him as a character (happens on maybe 2 occasions, neither of which go anywhere). The absolute pinnacle is the fate of Donna, the whole of which is designed solely so that her character arc has no ending but 10 gets a nice fresh load of angst as a tradeoff. Fuck Russell fuck Russell fuck Russell, VotD_angelicdeposition.webm, etc.

More like public liked what they were used to. As soon as Moffat changed the format of the show alot of people who were used to RTD Who left since it was not "muh who" anymore.
Its a problem with Doctor Who, its a constantly changing show so you will always have people that dislike certain eras, alot of people just prefered RTD since that was their first experience with Doctor Who and as soon it wasnt the same they lost interest or simply refused to watch

Literally just off the top of my head there's The Eleventh Hour, The Pandorica Opens, The Rings of Ahtaken, A Good Man Goes to War, The Time of the Angels, the list goes on and on. It's by far the era of Who most dedicated to wanking off the Doctor. The worst it got in Tennant's era is his "look me up" speech in Forest of the Dead, another Moffat episode.

Did NuWho shift pop culture, or did pop culture change NuWho?
The RTD era was from a time when Harry Potter and Twilight were huge, MySpace was still a thing, and it was on the edge of where being a fangirl was dressing in goth fashion, wearing Gir backpacks and holding up sporks.
The Moffat era is from a time where we have Tumblr and Facebook, fangirls adopted a more "nerd" chic (glasses, dorky clothes) and the biggest movie franchises are Marvel and Disney.
I just think it's amazing how "fan culture" changed so drastically between the 10th and 11th Doctors.
>>
>>68686210

i cant remember the name of the episode but it was in the catherine tate season and the doctor was stuck on a train with a monster outside and everyone is shitting themselves. he keeps trying to pull the "i'm fucking smart and the doctor listen to me faggots" shit and it backfires on him and they try to throw him out of the train which was refreshingly kekworthy.
>>
>>68686210
>The Pandorica Opens
Explicitly critiques the cliché by having it backfire on him.
>A Good Man Goes to War
As above but multiplied by 10000000. I mean this episode alone pretty much defeats your entire point, it is an episode in which the Doctor's entire shock and awe strategy goes completely wrong thanks to his pettiness and lack of care (as a side note, he is unfavourably contrasted against the unassuming and non-destructive Rory) and he gets completely excoriated at the end for having inspired an armed response to him in the first place.

>>

eh it's his first episode, of course they're going to give him a big moment to make viewers accept the youngest ever actor to play the part as THE Doctor. I'd say fair enough.
>Time of the Angels
what speech was this? the "don't ever put me in a trap line"? hardly a speech imo but so what if it is? all he does is shoot a gravity globe.
>The Pandorica Opens
the famous speech is a bluff that fails because he got shit totally wrong
>A Good Man Goes to War
another failed attempt, he gets rekt
>The Rings of Ahtaken
see above

>It's by far the era of Who most dedicated to wanking off the Doctor.

Midnight is great because it's the one time RTD suggests that 10's fundamental way of interacting with the world might be screwed.
I think it's a more effective attack on 10 than The Waters of Mars (which is the only other one, really) because WoM presents itself almost like a 'special case' that he breaks out of at the end.

No it doesn't, its purpose was to buy him time and it completely succeeds by getting the aliens to back down even though all they have to do is fucking shoot him because he's right fucking but they're all too terrified of him because he's The Doctor.

>>68686827

No it doesn't. The Doctor got tricked but it's not his fault for making a big speech and River and Kovarian's criticisms of him just confirm how much of a fookin' legend/unstoppable threat he is, just viewing it from a different perspective.

>>68686827

Doesn't matter, it's still meant to impress the audience with how cool and epic it is as opposed to making the Doctor look silly and pretentious.

That one's actually not that bad on its own, I actually kind of like it because it does lead into a cool cliffhanger, but it's the fact that 11 does so much of that kind of posturing all the time. It just starts to add up.

nah, do you even remember the episode m8? they 'back down' because they were never going for the pandorica like he thinks they were in the first place, not because his speech succeeds. he looks like a total idiot because they made the pandorica to imprison him in, and that's exactly what happens.

Does it ever strike you how ridiculously fucking dark the last 15 or so seconds of The Girl Who Waited actually are? As much as the ep is set up as this romantic love story of Amy and Rory and so on, what has actually been committed by the Doctor (and ultimately consented to by Old Amy and in turn Rory) is an act of violence performed to preserve the status quo - not just of the TARDIS but of the show itself. We need to delete this awkward intrusion of old, failed Amy so we can get back nice, young Amy full of possibility for future episodes.
The moment that Amy wakes up and asks "where is she?" followed by the Doctor's absolutely wordless ambiguous look at the camera is absolutely damning. The mere fact that the series will continue for the next several weeks, like nothing happened, is laid bare as the existential horror it is purely by that open ending. Because 11, Amy and Rory can easily all forget it happened, it will make no difference to their lives (and well, they never acknowledged it again on screen...) How many things like this might have happened? Conscious people consigned to time oblivion because we need the best possible outcome for our companion?

I'm blowing this up a bit, but it is quite literally the closest NuWho has got, and maybe will ever get, to what Briggs did with the end of Creatures of Beauty (not a spoiler because that story is completely different, but in the sense that it ends on a disturbing conceptual challenge to the moral legitimacy of the Doctor/show/audience).

aren't they afraid of him causing the cracks with his tardis in the future and that's why they formed an alliance against him? I guess they believe locking him in the pandorica is the surer bet to preventing whatever he does in the future to cause the cracks.

anyway that seems more a quibble about the plotting than about whether or not the aim of the speech is to make the doctor look cool & epic, and the whole why don't they just shoot him thing is a problem going back to the daleks. they don't just shoot him because he's the doctor and the show is called doctor who.
>>
The crucial distinction is that RTD isn't interested in fan culture at all, in fact he'd probably have laughed at the very notion that fandom constitutes a culture. He didn't want to make the show for people who only like nerd shit, he wanted to make it for its traditional audience - kids and their parents. Make it for them, and the nerds will come anyway. RTD's Who is, like most of the original run, science-fiction as a means to an end, to enable interesting ethical situations and drama. Moffatt's Who has consciously targeted fan culture, to its detriment. We have stories on alien planets with no identification figures or real-world meaning, ludicrous continuity-tangling sagas that ultimately change nothing, and a companion whose entire backstory is a timey-wimey gimmick. Bill looks like a move in the right direction, back towards relatable, normal characters.

I'm 31. Even when RTD's Who looked shit, we assumed TV couldn't look any better, so 'home-made' quality wasn't a thought we had at the time. This is pre-HD remember. Most of the time we thought it looked slick.

Because it's for fan culture, where nothing matters emotionally because there's never an ending. Compare Marvel. Lots of bombast, no real emotional consequence, because they're there to keep you on the treadmill for the next film, always the next instalment.

>>68689206
Please explain, in the simplest possible terms, how "there's never an ending" is true of "fan culture" in a way it is not true of Doctor Who in general. And do it quick before your logic literally topples over on itself.
>>
>>68689294

It's just true, though?
>>
>>68689498
Why are people sad for listening to Big Finish?
>>
>>68689439

In the simplest possible terms: The Master and the Doctor in that episode is a dramatic climax. The camp teaser of his survival afterwards doesn't effect the sincerity of that scene. In Marvel or Moffat's Who, the reverse emphasis occurs - the emotions are fleeting, the bombast is everything, and the continuation of the story is where the emotion goes. Compare The Master's survival or not and what it meant then, to the handling of Missy's apparent death in the Moffat era. The emotional stakes cannot be there when the treadmill of product is the main concern.
>>
>>68689424
