Why are Captain America and Tony Stark so hostile to each other at beginning of Avengers? Shouldn't they connect because of shared history with Tony's dad? Especially weird is that apart from their initial meeting they get along fine
loki's staff was fucking with them all

Howard Stark.
Steve knew him as a good man and a hero of WWII, a friend. Then he meets Tony and reads his files - he's a pale imitation. A petty and irresponsible man child who endangers others out of his petty conquests.
Tony never got close to his father, never got his approval. But instead he meets Steve and he's this perfect physical specimen with impeccable moral character - and Tony knows now he could never have lived up to him. Steve, in Tony's eyes, is the reason Howard never gave Tony a second glance.
So when these two finally meet, they both have tensions over what each thinks the other should be.
Both of them feel the other is a smear on the face of Howard Stark.
also, Loki's staff.

>Howard never gave Tony a second glance
Wasn't that debunked in IM2?
>>68660159
Yeah, but recording this and giving it to SHIELD isn't the same as telling Tony - he was obviously surprised and shocked...
Nick Fury knew a very different Howard to Tony.
He was a shit dad - regardless of how he felt in a scotch fuelled confession tape.

Marvel have their moments. Most people just stop looking at the movies at the first layer, which is the QuipCrust.

Cap is basically Rip Van Winkle. A man from the 40s, out of his element, overwhelmed by modern technology. To cap, Tony Stark is nothing like the man Cap knew. Factor is that Cap is overwhelmed by change, Cap has a disdain for Tony's cavalier attitude, his snarkiness, and his occasional hubris. In turn, as Tony puts it, Cap is a man out of his element, who got his powers form a bottle. Tony literally had to earn his technology and his suit, while Cap received it as a gift, even if he ha snatural heroism.
Cap didn't get along fine with Tony at first. He was mostly put off by anything in the modern era. After a while he did get tired of Tony's attitude.
