He's probably the best character in TFA, beating out Poe due to more screen time. And actual growth.
His vulnerability is the most interesting thing about him. Seeing our antagonist passionately shout TRAITOR or beat his bleeding wound in the heat of battle is wonderful, and a welcome departure from the stereotypical idea of an imperial Star Wars villain.
It's ironic that the vocal majority of people that shit on Kylo, or TFA in general, are prequel apologists. Who would defend Anakin and RoTS (ironically or not) as good character building or solid resolution, when Kylo is actually a perfectly written example of what Anakin should have been. He behaves like a real person with real motives and flaws, instead of an incomprehensible mongoloid with no flaws until the story calls for it strung along by a guy that turned into a monster right in front of his dumb ass.

The problem with anakin from day one is that he was George Lucas self insert in his universe. That ain't news, it's been like this since the Journal of the Whills. Lucas likes to fix cars and small electronics. Anakin likes to fix ships and droids. Lucas survived a car crash.
