Nah, the point of this is that it was a server featuring a rebuilt version of the game that no longer exists, and hasn't existed for many years. You can't just make a new server, it took awhile for them to fix bugs and script parts of the server to make it like the old version.
So it's not quite the same as just wanting to play for free, it's wanting to play a game that Blizzard no longer sells or supports. In fact people have clamored for subscription based legacy servers for awhile.

Not surprising, they usually charge $5 for the base game with all expansions other than the current one every year at Christmas, and WoD is only $20 regular price now. They're not losing much money at all and attracting new/lapsed players. Frankly, F2P is unnecessary, but it's hard to imagine paying for expansions these days, at least more than a few bucks. I am sure that's a big barrier of entry for people and keeps their sub numbers from growing.
