Why the hell did 16:9 ever become a thing? It's a literal downgrade from 1.85:1, which should have been the TV widescreen standard, not this weird 1.78 crap

I should have specified - IMAX film. For some reason the digital is 1.9:1 but film is 1.43:1. I like the way 1.43 fills your field of view in all directions when you're close enough.
