Mel Gibson is crazy competant but the core of the film is just torture-porn for christfags. It's popularity is owed to people's sheltered minds getting blown by Mel's gore - the poor fuckers thought they were having a spiritual moment. It might be the one of the most technically brilliant exploitation film ever, but it's still just an exploitation film - a slightly tedious and draining one at that.
Apocalypto was way simpler, but the characterisation was better, it had levity and fun/interesting themes. Passion had a better baby, though.
