So I just found out that Inception, which I always thought was a very original idea, is actually a rip off Paprika (2006) and Dreamscape (1984), with exactly the same scenes. I'm going to watch these movies soon.

What are other famous movies that are considered to be original stories but instead are rip offs?
>>
I love it when people post shit that isn't even remotely similar.
>>
>>68211366
They're called homages.
>>
>>68211366
Inception has moments in it that are inspired by/lifted from Paprika, but as a whole it's something very different.
>>
>>68211366
In creative industries the key is not to be original, but to be awesome.

It could be called a reference or homage. Kinda shitty but if you wow the pants off enough people, it will slide.
>>
>>68211402
Pretty sure nolan was up front about paying homage to based Kon.

Obviously there was an inspiration. Nolan's movies are similar to anime in many ways.

paprika is overrated af
so middlebrow it hurts, I guess teeenagers who only have azumanga diaoh to compar it to think it's high art though

Maybe you should watch Paprika before you call it a 'rip off' lol

That's very interesting! I add these movies to my list and will also watch them.
>>

Just like inception!! damn OP is right they are alike
>>
>>68211559
I agree that other Satoshi Kon movies are better than Paprika. If you are implying that based Kon is overrated kill yourself.
>>
>>68211366
It's a reference, not a ripoff.
>>
>>68211756
How so?
>>
>>68212642

it's not a reference.
>>
>>68211435
Whatever you say Quentin.
>>
Reminder you can pretty much steal all of your ideas, say it's a homage, and get away with it.
>>
inception is shit

don't understand why critics liked it
>>
I'm pretty sure Nolan said he had seen and loved Paprika

If you're going to be talking about Satoshi Kon getting ripped off, then by far the more comprehensive rip off is how Black Swan is essentially Perfect Blue.

Aronofsky denies he was inspired by or ripped off Perfect Blue, even though everyone already knows he bought the rights to it so he could directly copy a single scene from it in Requiem for a Dream. It's like he's saying he only ever watched that scene he copied, and erased the rest of the movie from his mind or something. It's kind of laughable, at that point you have no defense.

Martie remade Infernal Affairs scene for scene, made it worse with the addition of a useless love triangle, and it won Oscars.

A rip off would be flat out remaking, or doing a whole sequence the same. A homage would be something like a prop or dialogue that references
>>

How many times would they need to mention everything they reference to make you happy you autistic faggot?

If flat out saying it several times isn't enough

Doesn't have to, especially when the similarity is obvious.

Natural Born Killers

Everyone praised Oliver Stone for his style in that one, but it's basically just his attempt at making a Richard Kern. Not unlike how Brian DePalma was often trying to be Hitchcock
>>
>>68214079
Dreaming Machine didn't get made, anon, so good luck with that.
>>
>>68211366
It's a known fact that Nolan is a fan of Kon so it's not strange at all that Nolan takes inspiration from Kon's work. Kon was a master at combining visual and audio, and a central theme in all of his pieces is the dichotomy of dream and reality and the many lives of modern man.

Examples: Interstellar, The Prestige, Memento.

This said, Satoshi Kon may very well be one of the most influential progressive directors of the 20th century, and it's not just limited to Nolan. Nolan just make's it more apparent then others, quite possibly as an homage.
>>

May I ask which movies does Memento rips off? Because it is also a movie I like and still believe to be an original idea (story by Jonathan Nolan)

>>68213568

Nolan likes his anime references. The Dark Knight Rises has an entire sequence (the bombs going off in the sewers) lifted right from Patlabor 2.

>>
>>68215003
Perfect Blue, but I wouldn't call any of Nolans movies ripoffs because although there are similarities, all Nolans movies are their own original work(with Inception as an exception). Nolan usually takes the core concept and spins it, and make's his own thing.

>>
>>68212926
I wondered why the fuck she had that hairdo, it was totally a fish out of water on her for that.
>>
>>68216206
I googled this Donald Duck comic, which is called The Dream of a Lifetime, and in wikipedia page it is said "The idea of Inception, however, was pitched to Warner Bros. by Nolan in 2001, while Rosa's comic was first published in 2002." If this is true, then idea was even before Paprika. On the other hand it could be just idea and not script with scenes descriptions. Those could be still ripped off somewhere in 2008-2009.
>>
>>68212637
Yeah, it's too bad especially since it's his last and probably most positive film. Even sadder when you consider what he said about each of his film's characters representing him at the time.
>>
>>68211366
Another famous rip off would be Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers which was a rip off of Three Godfathers directed by John Ford.
