Really good movies, with some great Jake Gyllenhaal. Nice.
Wild Strawberries
The Seventh Seal
The Virgin Spring
The Magician (Ansiktet), 1960
Howl's Moving Castle
>>68155985
Gyllenhaal doesn't get nearly enough cred for how much he truly becomes the characters he portrays.

>>68155913
I kind of despised it my first watch, second time it blew me away. Try watching it again, I find it not only comfy and funny, but with a lot of things to analyze, from big things like the sexualization of Bigfoot to subtle things like the use of tears/crying. Plus I'm a sucker for Joaquin Phoenix.
>>68155916
Very nice, 2001 is right up there, any other day I may have decided to include it. I didn't love Forrest Gump but I'm not one of those that hates it either.

I watched Nightcrawler, wasn't that good. Drive was better desu. And so was Cold in July.
>>68156235
>regarding Forrest Gump
It's one of my favorites because I kind of have a soft spot for movies where characters find redemption. I really like how Lt. Dan and Jenny were able to find peace with life in the end.
Because of this, I also considered including The Shawshank Redemption, and Room (2015), and Groundhog Day in my top 5.
1. The Fifth Element
2. Terminator 2
3. American Psycho
4. The Raid 2
5. Take Shelter
In order. I absolutely love The Fifth Element, which makes Luc Besson's other work confound and infuriate me all the more.

Blade Runner

>>68156325
I just really like the character of Lou Bloom a lot more than the driver, but Drive is certainly one of my top 10, as well.
They're both really good at what they set out to do, tho. The main difference is Drive is more of a fantastical description of how the quiet/lonely really want to see themselves socially, while Nightcrawler is about how quiet/lonely people want to see themselves in regards to intelligence. I just like Nightcrawler a little more because Lou's just a bit more grounded, I guess, and that's personal preference.
they're both amazing films, tho, don't get me wrong. They just accomplish different things.
>>68156384
Room did catch my eye, but now I'll definitely watch it.
Might I suggest World on a Wire? Kind of daunting, but it may be the redeeming ending I enjoyed the most.
my top 5 right now:
>A Most Violent Year
>Chinatown
>L.A. Confidential
>Blade Runner
>Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (the 2005 one with RDJ and Val Kilmer)
some movies that could make it to my top 5 depending on my mood:
>The Godfather I and II
>Lolita (1997)
>Drive
>Nightcrawler
>Mud
>The Wrestler
Chinatown
Network
LA Confidential
There Will Be Blood
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
>>68156596
Yeah I just compared them because of stylistic similarities. The thing with Nightcrawler is that I expected more. Still wasn't as disappointed as with Only God Forgives aka nothing happens: the movie

I wouldn't say i like films about lonely people, I really just like films that are comfy. Often those two go hand in hand, tho.

One Flew Over the Cuckold's Nest
>>68157280
really atmospheric? A sort of straight up love for the settings the film takes place in.
Drive and Nightcrawler really romanticize the city of LA, drawing attention to bits and details nobody really pays attention to.
Cities and locations are almost a character in the movie themself. when you aren't just being passed back between action scene and exposition, the film gives you a chance to breathe, and grasp the world your characters are in, so you truly feel you're a part of it.
I spent a good 8 minutes trying to describe that, and that's the best I can really get at.
>>68157605
Interesting. Have you seen Prisoners (2013)? That might count as comfy.

I saw Barry Lyndon recently. It was really good. There were parts where they spoke languages other than English without subtitles, but it didn't detract much from me enjoying the movie. I could pretty much guess what they were saying, and I know some French. Were there supposed to be subtitles?
Gone Girl
Barry Lyndon
Borat
I could say a lot of things for the next two, but I'll just say Cowboy Bebop: the movie and Rashomon to be unique.
