Except with Preacher you're left with a regular Texas priest fucking about because the Voice bit is basically the whole story, whereas with Sandman you've got anthropomorphic personifications fighting against their nature and interacting with eachother in a multitude of ways. Or just about a woman discovering her connection to these things after waking up from a life-long coma and seeing amazing things. Sandman's the perfect background to make its own thing out of. Preacher has inbred people and an Irish vampire as the highlights.

The world and its inhabitants needs those sort of shitty written politics for it to work. The thing about Transmetropolitan is that it is a slightly bad comic. And that's also what makes it so good.
But they don't have to focus on things like the election. But those politics, and the political views of Ellis, always laid the groundwork for what the other stories was about. They are necessary.
