Honestly I liked him. I went in wanting a cold machine but the "he's Tony's son" explanation was pretty good.
However what did bother me was his motivation: Why destroy humanity if his purpose is to protect it? All the other plot points, especially the scene with Vision at the end, led me to believe Ultron was planning to turn all mankind into robots in order to fight incoming celestial threats. But the Studio forced Whedon to shove in a big explosion instead.
I think there was more to it.
