The Alien series is like the Hellraiser series, OP. Just watch the first two, and then stop. You've already done damage, so don't make it worse.
In Fincher's defense, he walked in halfway into a half-cocked production, which was still going through development hell. As a young new director, he wound up in the middle of this, having to take everyone's "notes", and the experience was so painful for him that he disowned the film.
On a positive note, I like to think that Fincher somehow channeled this personal suffering into his later work, such as it is.
