The ending was completely fine for the movie.
Cruise killed the host and therefore became the host by bonding with it's blood, resetting to his last safe checkpoint and erasing the former host because Cruise was the one who jumped.
He's probably gonna be earths most important man now in the sequel.
The movie, and book, both turned to crap once it stopped being groundhog day and started to be the "last cycle".

Agreed. The only thing that bothers me is how Cruise is able to keep his mind stable after dying so much and how he has to explain the plans to Blunt again and again. You can clearly see the looping has affected Blunt's character mentally.

Even then, we don't know the aliens objectives. Maybe they're just wild animals who just happened to pass by, but I can see them working as a kind of bioweapon, being sent by an alien race to destroy a planet's resistance before the colony ships arrive. I could see thoses aliens having the same timeloop power and the sequel would evolve into a fight where both sides fight across several loops.
