Jesus fucking christ /tv/, just watched the The Anvil Hoarder (1930) and I genuinely don't understand why this is held with such regard around here as top tier kino.

>the senseless dream-like opening with about twenty shots of horseshoes and dying goats completely disconnected from the entire movie
>that scene where Bauer and Elizabeth are about to fuck and it abruptly cuts to a hammer smashing crap legs on an anvil
>that scene where Samuel LaDupont passes the hammer and says "YOU are the anvil hoarder!" or some cheesy shit like that
>that scene where the priest asks him about his "existential purpose" or whatever and he responds "I anvil", like, what the fuck does that even mean
>that scene where the baker masturbates the dog while listening to the laughter of babies in the background
>that disconnected and completely senseless side plot with those Larssen and De Vries guys
>that scene where he's suddenly a slave being raped on a trimere for about three minutes straight
>the scene where Bauer sitting on top of all his anvils and starts reading Schopenhauer and listening to Beethoven, shortly before killing himself
>the ending as half an hour of an anvil sitting in an empty room to the sound of eerie music

Someone please explain to me why this bullshit film is so popular around /tv/.
>>
>>68002660
>it's an "anon tries to critique classic film without any sense of its place within film history" episode
read the zizek essay that came with the criterion edition and you'll understand its invaluable place in the didactic canon of pomo film
>>
>>68002833
I did take a look at the Zizek essay, it only made me even more confused. The faggot didn't explain shit about the film, he just kept on talking about how Bauer represented the struggle of the lower classes and the anvil represented the socialist ideology for 12 pages straight.
>pomo film
More like PORNO film, amirite? Goddamnit, the erotic scenes were so fucking obnoxious.
>>
>>68002660
>forgetting about the final montage of the anvil being melted down, recast, and forged into other anvils to comment on the cycle of life

Pleb.
>>
>>68004074
Fuck it, I was half asleep by the first 5 minutes of the final static shot of the anvil in the middle of the room, it was just so fucking pointless.

Why do people still support DeMarcos, being the faggot hack he was? Why is this shitty movie so popular?
>>
It's a disgrace how obscure this film is. It doesn't even have a wikipedia article nor an IMDb page, either way I'm making a list of the cast and director, I will appreciate aid with the minuscule details like the production and cast other than the director and main characters, unfortunately those were cut out in the American release and are only available in the golden anniversary release which wasn't digitally ripped.

The Anvil Hoarder (1930), France
Directed by: Louis Passorello DeMarcos
??? - Bauer
Chrisè Van Çee - Samuel LaDupont
??? - The Priest
??? - Elizabeth
etc.
>>
>>68004232
Because it is such an influential film. I enjoyed it, but regardless of whether it entertained you or not, The Anvil Hoarder (1930) is one of the most influential movies ever.

Yeah, it's not perfect by today's standards. But it's really interesting to notice how old movies influence filmmaking.

For instance, remember the part where Bauer kills himself? Remember how he does it? By building a contraption to suspend his anvil above him. He pulls the lever, cutting the rope, and the anvil falls on him and kills him.

This is the first time in the history of cinéma to feature a person being crushed by an anvil. Every time you see an anvil fall on top of someone in a movie since is a nod to this amazing piece of art.
>>
>>68003168
You need to take the ideology glasses off to see what Zizek means by sublating the dialectical notion of being under the late-capitalism society
>>
>"where is the last anvil you piece of shit dike kike? I'll rape every single one of you until I get an answer!"
Jesus Christ those deleted scenes
>>
Aww someone on a pleb-filled board who probably posts on /b/ and /v/, who has video games as his main interest, and not film, "can't understand" why a classic film is a classic.

Gee golly gosh what a coincidence
>>
>>68004522
Woah, this is a board for serious intellectual discussion of cinema and television. You can't just make shit up like that.
>>
>>68002660
>that disconnected and completely senseless side plot with those Larssen and De Vries guys
Did you not pay attention? It was LaDupont's way of trying to explain to Elizabeth the futility of good deeds when you don't understand the person you're trying to help. They didn't understand why Bauer hoarded the anvils, just like De Vries didn't understand Larssen was just a mad hobo rather than a real officer.
Kids these days, I swear.

>you need to stop looking at it with your ideology and look at it with my ideology

A friend of mine who's deep into kino history told me that the priest was an actual priest they found around the streets of Italy and willingly participated in the movie without even asking for a monetary reward, which is quite impressive given how DeMarcos was already pretty much out of budget during those scenes. Also, I'm pretty sure Elizabeth was interpreted by Edwina Barret, or at least that's what I read in my cinema class manual.

>>68004440
Yes, that's possibly one of the most remarkable moments in the whole film, no surprise it's so strongly embedded in modern cinema. It's really a pity that so many uncultured swines fail to understand exactly how much DeMarco's work changed the history of kino, the influence he had on some of his contemporaries like Serguei Einstein and Fritz Lang and even much later in Bergman is palpable.
>>
What did you guys think of the scene in which Bergenhofer threatens to decapitate Bauer with his own anvil? And then Elizabeth enters, holding a hammer, and says to Bergenhofer: "If there is peace in the world, you will drop it, and if there is violence, you will let it sing." Then Bergenhofer falls to the ground, weeping, and Elizabeth wraps her arms around Bauer - overcome with emotion, and drives her hammer into Bergenhofer's head.

Where are cinegrids for this film?

I'm thinking of watching this masterpiece of cinema, but first I need to get feel for what I'm about to watch so post them.
>>
>>68004928
Why would we post memes?
>>
The discrepancies of the avaiable versions of this film are incredible. I heard that due to several complications in production and even a personal incident between the director and the productor, certain parts of the movie were reshot.

DeMarcos version wasn't made avaiable until mid 50s, and even so it was only one copy.

Yeah, Fröbel the producer was notoriously difficult to work with. It's only thanks to DeMarco having a will of iron that the movie got made.

I was so moved by this scene. Elizabeth's utter dedication to Bauer, even to the point of committing murder to save him, and Bergenhofer's silent redemption via dropping the anvil... It's like a Christ allegory, come to form. Bergenhofer sacrifices himself for the anvil, and the anvil lives for Bauer - Bauer is redeemed through his own anvil. Elizabeth demonstrates a deep heroism, and perhaps she is the most heartfelt character of this film.
>>
Falcîon Cràbleg was an interesting character, but not sure I understood his "aucune politique en simple" scene.
>>
>>68004779
It's a complicated scene, but it makes more sense when you consider the political situation of 1930s Germany. Bergenhofer's character was mostly a representation of the untamed extremism that was rising at the time, a genuine madman who could not be controlled or tamed in any way while somehow feeling worthy of intellectual superiority. There is certainly a redemption thing going on in his arch, for the most part he absolutely hates Bauer for the purity and harmony his character represents but in the end Elizabeth's soft words make him realize that hate breeds hate and therefore all his psychopathic actions are merely a futile attempt to reach for a fallacious and contradictory sense of elitism.

As for Elizabeth deliberately crushing Bergenhofer's skull with the hammer right after that scene, I'm still unable to grasp the full meaning of that. Perhaps he was exposed to such a point where his whole existence fell completely empty, therefore eliminating any will to live he could possibly have? It could have been like pulling a terminally ill dog out of his misery? Hell, there's a brief insert shot of the baker's dog in that scene, so I guess that could have been DeMarco's implication.

>>68004967
There's one still in >>68004713, I have yet to find more though.
>>
>>68005063
Well it's really just a re-packaged fingerbox
>>
Why doesn't Wikipedia have an article on this movie? It was such a shock seeing the whole thing. I mean it's a long fucking movie and it obviously has cultural and sociological brevity, so why is it so hard to find?

Anon where did you see this?

They had a showing at my college a year ago but they said the price of admission "didn't include the anvil" and i didn't have an anvil around. How did you get one? Did people give you shit that your anvil was new or you found a used one?
>>
>>68005554
I got my first anvil from the workshop in my elementary school. There were two of them, one so heavy I could barely lift it, and one small one that basically just a novelty item and not meant for real use.
I swiped it one day because I was a bad dude. It has opened many doors for me. As you know, you can't BUY your anvil.
>>
>>68005382
IIRC, about 5.000 theater reels were destroyed by Nazi Germany druing the mid 30s for its subversive themes. It was only during the 50s that a copy of the reel as it was originally intended for release, kept in a safe by his family throughout the last two decades, was finally shown to a small audience in Switzerland as per DeMarco's will on his deathbed. At least that's what I heard in my cinema history classes.
>>
>Bauer stands inertly in the church, holding onto his last anvil
>the priest melancholically walks in, staring at the miserable man in the altar

What did he mean by this?
>>
>>68005793
It means he think of life as a burden but is afraid to die.
>>
Is this film same as or worse than BvS if you replace Batman and Superman with anvils?
>>
>>68005870
If anything Iron Man is the anvil and Captain America is the hammer.
