1. In Alien she wasn't a total bad ass. It's not like she was saving all the men on ship, or doing kung fu after looking at a pamphlet. In Aliens she kind of was a bad ass and we know why, she is the only one to have fought a xenomorph and lived. And her whole family died 100years ago. And she still needed to be couched by the bad guy to go.

Luke does take on Vader, Han does. Luke is really assisted by his squad and then Han. He doesn't fly solo and if he did he would have been killed.
He shoots down some tie fighters in the millennium falcon, but that was because the empire wanted them to escape, they say as much in the film.

Rey's issue is one which a lot of action film protagonists have nowadays; they're all so confident, competent and never in any real peril, so it becomes almost impossible to really relate or give a shit about them. Gone are the days of watching Ripley or John McClane get scared as shit and beat the fuck up, or to have serious interpersonal problems with people in their lives. Modern leading characters in these types of films can do everything, are effortlessly badass and everyone loves and respects them. And if someone doesn't then that person is portrayed as being wrong/evil/whatever.
There's a reason I preferred Finn and his scenes when compared to Rey; he actually struggled with things and had to get his ass saved and also had a proper character arc.

Even if you hate it, Thurman character was a trained killer, like everyone else in the movie. She had a thick background full of combat and her motivation that kept her rolling was pure old fashioned revenge. Even if she was going over the top with her actions she was still struggling throughout her journey.
Besides, there are lots of real life stories of women doing incredible shit when their children are involved. It's top tier motivation for a strong character.

I don't buy this tough orphan junk salvaging act. Women don't work in junkyards pulling parts out of vehicles in real life so it doesn't make any sense to see it in a movie. In our world women are protected so they don't need to learn how to fight so it doesn't make any sense to see a woman beat up a gang of men that are trying to rob her. If Star Wars were real life Rey would have ended up in some sort of space brothel, and she should have. It would have been more realistic and interesting but most of all relateable. We could have seen how that sort of life shaped her and made her a strong woman but instead we got a man in a woman's body.
